Did you have any popular obsessions?

I remember when I was in seventh grade, I had these two popular obsessions, The Spice Girls and Titanic. When we were moving to Montana, mom was telling me what not to talk about or else kids will think I am weird and not want to be around me but she didn't tell me to not talk about these two so I did when school started. I talked about these two and instead I got rejections and got teased, I was called Titanic Girl and one girl was a b***h to me.

I learned on here that when people have obsessions that are socially acceptable, people don't mind it and they can talk about it but when I did it, it was wrong. I figure maybe it was because they weren't popular in my school so I was still the weird one when I talked about it. Then one of my aspie friends told me it was a gray and it's not wrong so I asked him how it's gray and he said it's not what I say it's how I say it. Then I remembered I did talk trivia about the ship and the disaster and the music group so maybe that's why. Then I would just talk about it to provoke them because I thought they were being unreasonable. Mom even restricted the movie from me by having me only watch it once a month simply because it's too long. So I went back to 101 Dalmatians and London completely eventually. Now I wonder if things would have been different if I thought of what if I only watched tape one and then tape two the next day so that way it won't be long.

So did anyone here have any obsessions that were popular and you still got rejected for them and still got crap for it?

Mostly, I seem to get obsessed with things the general public doesn't care, or know, about. xD

Lion King was popular for a while, but after the newness of it died down and the other kids discovered give and take friendships, that's when other kids started thinking I was weird. I was obsessed with meerkats before they became so popular. I was homeschooled by the time I became super obessed with meerkats but the evil neighbor kid would tease me about them. So did the so called "Christians" at Wednsday Youth Club and this Nazi phycologist. When Meerkat Manor got popular, I was suddenly admired for my obsession. Now if people tease me I can tell them to go procreate with themselves and not get in trouble for it because I am an adult now. I kinda lost intrest in meerkats for a while because they were so popular. I don't know why, but if something I like becomes popular suddenly, I automatically loose some interest in it. It felt like people were taking my meerkat obsession away from me. My newest obsession is Sonic the Hedgehog and that already is popular if you know where to look. But then I got into it knowing it was very popular and aparently it only so popualr with what one would call "nerds".

Video games, they'll always be popular, from Super Mario and Pokemon to Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead

When I was in school, some of my special intense interests/ obsessions were:

Roller Coasters (elementary school thru today)---By the time I was in high school I had memorized the statistics of every roller coaster in North America.

House Plans---I collected stacks and stacks of house plan books. Even in elementary school I was drafting my own house plans. During middle school I used to design hotels. Mom got me an office/ motel furniture catalog so I could figure out the dimensions and costs of all the things needed to be put in the rooms.

Earthworks---In high school I began studying the geometrical configurations of Hopewell earthworks in Ohio and trying to discover new geometries in them.

Same here. It went from different types of trees, to the Holocaust, to my current Ratchet and Clank one.

When I was in elementary school, I was obsessed with Pokemon, and that was really popular at the time.

Then in junior high, I was really into anime, which is a popular geek hobby. I had acquaintances who were really into it too, but I also got made fun of by people who didn't like it, such as one girl who called me a "Japanese wannabe" and a boy in my art class who made fun of the fact that all I drew pictures of was anime because he said that it was "too easy to draw" to be considered "art".

My primary obsession with Johnny Depp movies is very popular. I'm glad because it makes it easy to engage everyone I meet in conversations about it.

No, but kinda. Most people aren't interested in the same sorts of things I am, but there are a lot of people that are, it's just a relatively small percentage when compared to the overall population.

I was obsessed with video games for a bit and played them all the time. I have no idea what the difference is between an aspie being obsessed and an NT. I even knew an aspie who was also obsessed with the game Goldeneye just like I was and we both spend hours playing it while I noticed with my brothers they weren't that intense with it despite that it was popular for them too. My mom tried to limit that game too for me so I wouldn't be in the basement all day with that game and never doing anything else. Then she started to just have me play the darn game because it kept me calm. Even my ex aspie's parents didn't want to get him that game either because they were afraid they never see him again (not literally) because he be in his room all the time with that game. Maybe that is what the difference is. But what is the difference between game addiction and an obsession with them? Luckily I never got crap for this interest.

I was obsessed with Pokemon, Tomagatchis and Yoyos. My obsessions started diverging from my peers' somewhere in middle school, where they started becoming obsessed with bands and post-primary school social subcultures and associated clothing, I deepened my interest in math, physics and ancient history. My teenage obsession with Hitler seemed pretty common among gifted folks and anime was liked by a few in highschool.

I knew several in my neighborhood that were glued to the TV playing Goldeneye and they definitely weren't aspie. I myself was glued to the TV playing Perfect Dark as was my neighbor.

One of my interests was the Spice Girls too! Unfortunately I was already 17 and the Spice Girls were well past the height of their fame. It was pretty embarrassing

I worked really hard to hide it back then. Now though, I really don't care if people think that I am weird. If my interest brings me happiness and calmness that is all that matters to me.

I was into Titanic too but more about the history than the movie. My mum bought me books about it. I wasn't really a talker back then but I drew pictures of it and one person gave me $1.50 for a drawing.

The Lion King was pretty popular and so were a few other Disney films. When I was a teenager my sisters friend got me into Lord of the Rings and I got really obsessed about that. My sister said that I was too serious about it.

I think we tend to get really intense into our interests, learn factual information rather than just talking about what we love most about it, and tend to focus on just one part of it. I'm into sci-fi but with other sci-fi TV fans I still feel like I don't get them. Even the way they talk is just so different. Basically, I can't tell their nerds through their speech. I always thought they'd be more pedantic like me.

I remember when the movie first came out, my parents told me how teens were seeing the movie again in theaters because they thought the boy in the movie was cute so they were seeing it again just to see him. They even thought I saw it for that reason and I blurted out that I saw the movie because it was about the ship and I thought it was interesting. I did keep seeing the movie in theaters when I could and my parents found that acceptable but yet they wouldn't let me see 101 Dalmatians again when it was in theaters. My dad probably would have let me but not my mom. I think it was dad that took us every time to see the movie. I also read books about it too. My ex aspie mate was into it too and when he was at my home, we watched the movie about three times.

I do admit I did cry when Jack died. It sucks to lose someone you love.
