My obsessions were always obscure topics, at least at the time I became obsessed with them. The main one was meerkats. I got obsessed with meerkats via Timon from The Lion King. My mom says it's because I could relate to him...i.e. an in-your-face, obnoxious loudmouth who was still likeable. I never meant to be obnoxious, I just aparently came off to people as that way and I think Timon does as well.

Anyway meerkats were my obsession. Anyone who knew me knew about meerkats becuase of me and I was often made fun of for my obsession. Even my own family members tourtmeted me. Harry Potter was the big thing at the time and I hated it with a passion becuase it was okay to like that, but not okay to like meerkats. It was also perfectably acceptable to be a weeaboo, but not to be obsessed with meerkats. Suddenly Meerkat Manor came out and it was suddenly considered cool to like meerkats. I wasn't harassed anymore, but I somehow found myself not liking meerkats that much. Thankfully, Meerkat Manor seems to have gone down in popularity and "Copare the Meerkat" is a UK thing. My newest obsession is Sonic the Hedgehog. Some may argue that is popular, but it seems to be popular amound people like nerds and social outcasts. Aparently a lot of Sonic fans are autistic. http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt183246.html

A lot of people claimed they were once Sonic fans but the behavior of other fans scared them off and they are no longer fans. So basicaly, Sonic fans have a bad name. I've never really encountered anything negative about my Sonic obsession like I did with my meerkat and Lion King obsessions and actualy suspect that Sonic became an obession so I could subconciously crush the bad memories associated with my my Lion King obsession. Anyway, Sonic fans are protrayed in a really negative light. While most people might be disturbed about their fandoms being dissed left and right, I actualy am rather pleased.

When mine become popular, I am really flattered, because I don't feel so alone knowing that others like my interests.

That happened to me with Lord of the Rings. I loved the books, and then the movies came out and suddenly everybody knew what I was talking about when I mentioned Thranduil or Minas Tirith. It was an interesting experience because for the first time I could talk to NTs about my special interests without boring them. I was still more nerdy about it than most people were, and I got severely annoyed by the proliferation of Legolas fangirls; but all in all, a positive experience.

I haven't really experienced this yet but being a fan and reader of the Marvel comic Deadpool since 1997 I kind of have mixed emotions about the proposed movie with Ryan Reynolds. It sounds like they might finally be beginning production. A part of me really wants to see him on the big screen in a really good movie but another part worries that then he will become a huge thing so I almost hope any movie that gets made is a complete bomb. Lol, that's pretty selfish and silly I guess.

kingdom hearts and streetlight manifesto, both are known by about 20-10% of people and both are awesome to the bone. If more people liked it, I wouldn't mind.

Back in the 60s and 70s. I felt special because I knew everything about Star Trek before the term 'Trekkie' was coined.

Now that 'everyone' seems to be able to quote lines from the franchise, I no longer have that special feeling, and I've lost all interest in Star Trek.

I used to have a habit of picking new favorite bands, then listening to them change, stop liking them, and low and behold, THAT'S when they would become mass successes.

Used to get a fat head telling people, "They suck now. You should have heard them a few years ago, when they were good! :P"

Hipsters have that happen to them all the time it seems. ;-)

Was Meerkat Manor the one on one of the kids channels with the two guys and the meerkat puppet? They went to places to look at animals or something, I don't remember it that well, I just remember the two guys. Mainly one of the guys. They were brothers. My kids used to watch that show when they were little. Because for years I always had a baby or child young enough to be rocked to go to nap, I would sit in the rocking chair and watch the shows with them. I would sit there with them and watch along as well when I was done with my housework. Sometimes I would read, but a child would always want to be in my lap, or a baby would be fussy, so it was usually the rocking chair and kids shows for me to relax. Some I liked, some I didn't. I did like the meerkat one, although I don't remember anything but the brothers. They were in their late 20's and really kind of hot. Animals and puppets for the kids, two hot guys for the moms. I'm surprised that show isn't still around, or it actually might be.

That is most illogical, captain.

In all seriousness, I've found that half of my generation doesn't even know what the Enterprise is.

My husband is a Trekkie from back in the day when the original series was on first run. He loves it. I don't care for it, and none of the kids do except my youngest daughter. She's 15. She's seen all the movies, watches the all the series, knows all that stuff. She's just like him about it. She loves it. She's a Trekkie already.

He was so pleased that somebody took interest in his show that he even agreed to watch one of her shows with her. Now he's all caught up in "The Vampire Diaries" LOL! A 48 year old construction worker following The Vampire Diaries.

I've had my primary interest become more mainstream and big budget over the years. Well, the cloud of stuff that surrounds my interest. Which is to say, the entire video game industry. It makes it interesting in the sense that bigger and better stuff gets made for my favorite parts (mostly Bioware and Bethesda RPG properties), but it also often means that something I'm really invested in stops being published (D&D computer games) in a manner that I enjoy.

I used to be really into Star Wars. Deeply. As in I have owned the majority of books from two iterations of the Star Wars RPG, multitudes of the novels, and of course numerous video games. I think Knights of the Old Republic was sort of a pinnacle for me because it was a high budget for the time computer RPG about one of my favorite fictional settings. Strangely, now, I can't seem to get interested enough in it to get into Star Wars: The Old Republic. I even spent months in beta without much participation.

I don't think popularity makes me dislike anything. If anything, I like seeing the subject of my interests prosper and grow. I admit that I have not always thought that way - there have been times when I hated seeing the subject of my interests lose its niche appeal and become generally popular.

Still, gaming is my primary interest. If I could have enough space to set up my tabletop wargames, I would do it all the time. :D

When I was in my mid to late teens, I was obsessed with a couple of vampire anime, Hellsing and Trinity Blood. I felt special for liking things with vampires in them, because that was when vampires were still considered "edgy" and "dark".

But then Twilight happened, and it killed any sense of pride I had in my enjoyment of pointy-fanged children of the night. I dropped my interest in Hellsing and Trinity Blood like they were hot coals. Though in my defense, my interest in them was already starting to wane; it's just that the sudden explosion of vampire popularity turned out to be the final nail in the coffin (pun intended).

Now, one of my current special interests, Tim Burton movies, is merging with my former interest in vampires in the form of the movie Dark Shadows. I am eager to see it and constantly scour the Internet for new information on it. I believe that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp will make it OK to like vampires again. I have seen every movie that they've ever done together, multiple times, and they have not disappointed me yet.

I feel an intense joy and celebrate, because I feel that I'm a part of something big. :)

When my special interest becomes popular, who cares?
