Does anybody else get called 'stupid' and 'silly' because of the way they act? I often act in a way which isn't appropriate for my age group, and people often call me 'stupid, 'silly' and 'weird' for this reason, even though socioemtoional development has nothing to do with intellectual intelligence.

For example, I like making tractor, train and car noises. Yes, it is inappropriate for my age group, and most of the people don't do this after reaching the age of 5. I know that my socioemotional development is lagging enormously.

Why on Earth do insanely idiotic people assume that I'm stupid based on my socioemtoional development? Is it really hard for them to work with complex concepts such as intelligence? Intelligence is merely a set of many unrelated and interrelated different abilities. It's a completely irrelevant social construct. My information synthesis, learning and reasoning abilities are very well-developed, but my socioemotional abilities aren't. Why on this Earth would these idiots generalize all these abilities and try to apply it to me, and do so only based on my socioemotional development?

Last time I looked allot of females call 25+ year olds, mentally 8 year olds etc... Just a stupid sexest remark.

& last time I looked 50+ year olds play with train sets & make train noises. Sure they say most of the time males are silly that still act like kids...

Just ignore it.. Funny they insult males for not been able to look after kids, then they insult them for been kids lol

I think its because in their mind all development is supposed to line up in typical people... So to someone who isn't aware that you, or even 1 in 100 or whatever the stats are now a days... might not line up in development across all areas doesn't even occur to them.

The see something that indicates less development and their mind assumes as a result that other developmental areas are impaired.

Not much you can do to fix that, unless you are able to show people that you are smart as often as possible. Don't worry about people thinking you are intellectually pampas or egotistical... just let it rip! share the intelligence :)

Yeah, I think you're just going to have to get used to it. Let them think you're stupid for a while, and then prove them wrong. People thought I was dumb until I skipped a grade and took all honors and AP classes...I showed them! You can do it too. Eventually, people will start to see you as some kind of super-intellegent kid who happens to have an adult body.

Because it's childish, and children usually don't know as much as adults, so childish = stupid. It's sort of funny to think of someone talking with this level of vocabulary and making train noises...

I know how frustrating this is. People also equate intelligence with communication abilities, both verbal and nonverbal. I'm pretty much incommunicado on both counts these days. It's maddening when you're faced with some trained ape at a supermarket checkout who only speaks a single language, has read maybe three books in his entire life and has a vocabulary of 8,000 words or less, and that ape treats you like some kind of village idiot.

Not so much, but I rather hear those words over my faultiness being pathologized.

You used the word 'idiots', which is the same thing anyway.

I dont think most people understand that humans have different streams of development to go through. Emotional/Social/Intelectual etc. So they see an obvious discrepency between someones age and how they act and just assume they are stupid.

Or it could be that the people calling you stupid find your tracter noises irritating so they just say a typical word like "stupid".

Sometimes people call your behavior or whatever you are doing stupid, not you as stupid, just what you are doing is stupid. I can remember having this hair tie and I put it around my mouth and nose and showed it to my aid. She told me I looked stupid or told me it was stupid, I don't remember which. Sometimes my husband will say something and I call it stupid. I am not calling him as a person stupid, I am calling what he told me is stupid. Or if someone cuts me off on the road, I say "what an idiot" I mean he is an idiot for what he is doing. It doesn't mean his intelligence is low.

I think we sometimes take these words too literal than knowing they mean for what we are doing. I know things people do have nothing to do with intelligence because people do stupid things all the time. Even my brother who is very smart has done stupid things and my mom would shout "Mike, what are you doing?" or "what were you thinking?" and he would go "oops, sorry mom I wasn't thinking, I had my brain turned off." He would realize he was being stupid because he was not thinking. Even I am stupid too sometimes.
