Today I called a psychiatrist out of curiosity, to ask what I'd have to do to get officially diagnosed and how much it would cost.
It was very bizarre because I'd never thought of Asperger's as a disability, just as an "inconvenience due to being surrounded by a different species". She started talking and mentioned neuro something or other treatments and how she could teach me to communicate and be "normal". She actually used to word "normal" and that made me think that she thinks that I am abnormal. I am not abnormal! I am different, that's all. I said to her that in actual fact I don't wish to be "normal". She laughed and said she can show me to be able to "integrate" better. Anyway, I asked about the cost and she said the "beginning" would cost $900 and then there would be therapy and the likes.
I don't have $900 anyway. She then sent me an email and that included some forms I had to fill in, and I thought it was very invasive and rude to ask me if I have ever sniffed glue and if I am sexually active and if I use protection etc what does all this have to do with an AS diagnosis??
Overall, I have never had to deal with american doctors, I am used to how things r in England.
I don't think I would go even if I had the cash... it was interesting though!! lol

All those invasive questions are standard in our free society...

Actually my step-mother was quite honest with her doctor and marked what she HAD done in the boxes (quite a bit). He came to her and told her "NEVER mark those boxes yes!"... Which is probably how you should always answer, your a non-drinking, non-smoker, no drugs... or a once a week drinker, cigar once a month smoking, no drugs.... Unless your bleeding from the nostrils and Dr. House is standing over you asking for the truth.

They'll start charging you more or deny you a kidney for honesty.

Yes, I agree. The answer is always no.

Those who check "yes" will regret it. If not immediately, then eventually.

They already assume you're lying, um, "understating" ~ regarding illicit behaviors ~ I think they multiply it by 10 or so.

Like if you drink one beer a day they figure it's ten.

Had sex with six people = 60

Stuff like that.

I say no, regardless. I know why they claim to be asking (for your sake, don'tcha know) but you can probably take care of yourself in that regard, without their "help"... Just know what's contraindicated with whatever they give you... and don't mix 'em.

YMMV
