I was diagnosed with asperges when I was 9. I was fairly socially rubbish back then. Now I am 17 and I can socialise pretty well. I can even flirt. I've read articles that when people mask there symptoms it is very energy consuming. If I am masking I can do it for months or year's. I have few aspie moments nowadays. I used to not look into people's eyes ( when I was a baby) and I used very complicated language, and im not very coordinated, but I don't do that anymore. The fact that this masking isnt tiring me is confusing. It makes me wonder if I ever had it. I am at the most a quirky guy who pulls faces and likes doctor who, a bit like charlieissocoollike ( that British guy off of YouTube) what are your opinions, do you think I have asperges?

Universally, people with autism will learn as they get older, and it will get easier.

Do you have Asperger's? Neuorologically, yes. If you ever did, then you do now. You're still different. However, if you do not have significant impairment due to these traits, you cannot be diagnosed.

Whether you still need a diagnosis is not something I can tell you. You aren't on your own and providing for yourself yet; that's often one of the big hurdles that people with AS discover outstrips what they have learned about the world. Wait until you have been independent for a few years, and then re-evaluate it.

I agree, if you did have it, then technically you do still have it.

The question is, did you ever have it? Did you actually get misdiagnosed and you were just a quirky child? Have you taught yourself these skills, or did they just come naturally?

Most importantly, does it really matter to you to be diagnosed correctly, or are you happy with just being whoever you are now?

Ps. Doctor who is awesome :)

It's hard to say. Like everyone else has already pointed out, it is a neurological difference that stays with you your whole life. That being said, some of the high functioning individuals on the spectrum can learn how to function very well. This is especially true when they are in highly social environments like school. However, many do regress later in life when the social situations are not as common and they lose their adaptations. Also, people are tolerant of some quirks if the person is generally good to be around, and someone whose autistic traits are mild would possibly fall into this category.

I am the only one who thinks he has not Aspergers? (based on what people would think of me because I have the symptoms yet they believe i'm NT otherwise I'm not a neurologist and never heard of any accurate tests to be sure of that...sic!) Given the information, he is well integrated and doesn't sound like a typical aspie PLUS childrens at a young age can be shy or awkward because of any other reasons than autism.
So why do you believe he has Asperger's? Because he was diagnosed by a specialist? Isn't this appeal to authority a little overestimated?

I was diagnosed twice by a professional when I was around 5 or 6 and then when I was a young adult. But back then professionals knew very little about the Autism Spectrum. But, it was recently where I was asking myself if I had HFA or Aspergers. I have done an unbelievably amount of research to find out. While for the most part HFA and Aspergers overlap making it hard to tell the difference. There seems to be some traits or lack of traits that are associatd with Aspergers and not HFA. I have saved every on-line article. I have so much information that it was almost overwhelming for me to deal with it. I took a number of those online test which always indicated that I have Aspergers as well. But, I finally got an answer which told me I have Aspergers Syndrome. I just wished the mental health professional knew enough about being on the Autism Spectrum back then, that they would have been able to tell me.

If you do, it is so mild that it will be hard to diagnose you. You sound pretty much like an NT to me. You just don't have the traits and demeanor that those on the Autism Spectrum have. You got to realize that most NTs have 1 or 2 of the less significant traits that those on the Autism Spectrum have.

Here is my list of traits (Symptoms). While you won't have all of them you should have some of them and maybe different traits. I'm apparently a little more severe then many of the Aspies here.

1. Socialization and awkwardness; didn’t even want to live with anyone else after I left my parent’s house at 19. I could hardly wait to get away because I couldn’t enjoy certain aspects of Aspergers as long as I was still living under my parent’s roof. I have never lived in a house or apartment with anyone else either as I’ve always been in my own places all by myself, which I love living in my own world.
2. Don’t have any real friends.
3. Stimming which is extreme.
4. Extreme Sensory Overload, especially with hearing and low frequencies.
5. Extremely upset when taken out of my comfort zone or having my routine changed.
6. Fixation on subjects (dreams and dream research) and objects (My die cast backhoe loader toys and replicas) which would include objectophilia. I just stare at the ones in my case while laying with 2 others. But, they are my partners in bed with me as well. A true Aspergers trait;
7. Penmanship. I have to print or use a computer
8. Obsessed with making lists and collecting data, such as this list of Aspergers traits for example.
9. Face tics and strange hand movements.
10. I hate to be touched or hugged which is more extreme now.
11. Talking very soft, everything in-between to very loud as if I'm screaming at people as well. My mind says one thing and my mouth says another sometimes. I just can't get the words out properly at times. But, this seems to be more of an Aspie trait since many of those with HFA are unable to speak when they were suppose to as children. As long as I can remember I always spoke though it was distorted at times.

I have others as well, but they aren’t as noticeable now as when I was a child. And they are:

1. Running around in circles and talking to myself without other children when I was a child. I still talk to myself which isn’t as bad as when I was a kid and I don’t run around in circles anymore but obviously I have substituted this with other things.
2. Picking fuzz off blankets if I was using these kinds of blankets; I have been using the foam rubber blankets now days.
3. I couldn’t walk until I was 3 years old.
4. Gave my teachers a lot of problems in the first, second and third grades which is why I was taken out of school for a year and graduated a year later. I barely got through school with mostly Ds and some Fs. However, I excelled in art (gifted) and spelling. Did pretty good in English and bookkeeping with B’s and C’s. I did better in subjects that I was interested in and learned a so much more after I got out of school.

Oh BTW, I'm unable to mask some of my traits in public and that is why I have so many problems with the way NTs treat me. I'm either called stupid or overhear someone saying that I look ret*d.

Because his description of his behavior at a younger age sounds pretty typical for an Aspie child--no eye contact, pedantic speech, dyspraxia. And the eye contact difference started in infancy.

It may be different case, but it's still possible: he could be in "anti-AS" phase, so his self-evaluation of social skills might be inappropriate. We're not sure what people ACTUALLY think about him.

He may or may not have asperger's but I doubt he has asperges, as he suggests unless he is a Catholic. (asperges is the rite of sprinkling holy water around at a Catholic mass).

I just thought he misspelled Aspergers and didn't even think anything about it. So I had to look up the word "Asperges" that he used after reading your post. I thought you were telling us the truth, but I was just taken back.

From Wiki
Asperges is a name given to the rite of sprinkling a congregation with holy water. The name comes from the first word in the 9th verse of Psalm 51 in the Latin translation, the Vulgate, which is sung during the Traditional form of the rite, except during Eastertide. The 51st Psalm is also one of the antiphons that may be sung in the rite under the Mass of Paul VI.

Hehe, yeah, I don't think they ordain priests at 17. :)

BTW, OP, don't think we're making fun of you for your typo. We do that stuff all the time ourselves... the other day I was trying to play-act a NPC death cultist for a role-playing game, and I made her sound like a Valley Girl! I couldn't stop laughing. We decreed that thereafter, all death cultists talk like valley girls. I don't think I'll ever be able to see my dour, honorable, not-quite-sure-how-to-be-evil Abyssal the same way ever again!

Okay first of all let me say that I am not an expert or a doctor. Just another 17 year old battling aspergers just like you. But let me ask you a few questions to help take this further based on some of my traits. First off, Do you have an obsession, a weird phobia, or both? Like not that you like to play sports or video games as an example but that you always want to talk about sports and video games endlessly like you feel like you need to tell everyone every single play in a certain sport/facts about every athlete or every single aspect of a video game. Or maybe you have an abnormal phobia. Like for me, my obsessions are playgrounds, music, and toilets. I feel like I always have to talk about music and I need to know every band, song, album etc. Also my dream is to build my own playground. My fear is toilets. Yes, my worst fear is my obsession. I feel like I need to know every kind of flusher, toilets, urinal(ladies and men even though I am a lady), and fixtures( #/color of stalls, sinks, walls etc.) But on the same token, if I see an unfamiliar toilet then I sometimes won't use it. I feel like I have to go and look at every single toilet.

Are you a picky eater? Are you afraid to try new foods and only eat a limited quantity of different foods. If so then you're like me. My favorite food is pizza. I am afraid to try new things for example, I have never tried cole slaw, potato salad, or pumpkin pie because I am afraid I won't like them. Do you get constipation? I get major constipation. Like I can't poop naturally without a long fight. So, I need to drink prune juice to help a little.

Do you play with your hands? I flap my arms rapidly when I'm excited. I also but my nails and play with a toy in my hands when I'm in bed not sleeping. Sometimes I click my heels on the ground repeatedly. It sort of makes me feel calm.

Do you space out? In school sometimes if I'm doing independent work then I'll space out and think about random things and the teacher will come on to me and make sure I'm doing okay and get me back on focus. Nicely of coarse because they know I'm not fooling around and causing trouble. I am usually the most behaved in my classes I just lose focus sometimes. I also have an IEP which gives me several accommodations and modifications including(this is not all of them) extra time and modified assignments. Do you have an IEP?

Lastly, when you are in school, and you need to pick groups for projects or assignments, Do you often hang back until someone finds you? That's what I do a lot. Like when the teacher says pick a partner or a group, I'm too shy to ask someone so I prefer when the teacher picks groups even though most detest that. But when they make us choose groups I wait for someone to ask me as not to burden them. Also, as a child I was always shy to say excuse me. But I didn't want to be rude either so I would always try to walk over people without stepping on them as to avoid both(very difficult to do). I am better now but still a little shy. The first word I learned in French besides bonjour of coarse was excuse moi sil vous plait which means excuse me please. I learned this word in 2nd grade because of the problem with saying excuse me. I felt much more comfortable saying it French then English for whatever reason.( I took 2 years of French, freshmen and sophomore year of high school) She told the entire class what it meant so they would know. It made me feel more comfortable.

Hopefully, you can answer these questions and that will help you. These are things I do due to my aspergers.
