I just put up a second order theory of mind test. Anyone want to test themselves on it?

This is a harder version of the standard theory of mind (Sally/Anne) test.

Works, the image links are broken however, and in the result your <p>s are showing. :)

Hi Ettina,

Thanks so much for posting this. At a glance I see it resembles ones I've read about in a couple of journals, but never actually been able to find. I'm going to try it right now!! You do a great job posting your tests, surveys etc.

One thing I should say is that the pictures don't seem to be loading. I've tried in both Chrome and Safari without luck. Presumably it can still be done without them? I do hope so.

Yeah, the pictures aren't essential, they basically give the same information as the text but in visual format.

It really sucks that they're not working, though. Don't know what's up with that.

100% Passed 8)

Ironically, a few years ago I prob would have failed...miserably. When I looked into the possibility that I could be an Aspie (after an abusive relationship) I took the simplified version and got the incorrect answer. Later, I looked into TOM.

Failed (0% ToM and 100% control)

I also failed the Sally-Anne test the first time I took it last year there....

I passed. 40% TOM and 100% control whatever that means. But it took lot of concentration.

I saw no images either.

I scored 100% on both, but it took a bit of work.

I remember going through this while playing D&D of all things, learning that just because I know something it doesn't mean my character would, or that other characters do not necessarily know things I know.

I couldn't see any of the pictures. I was so confused. I finished the test, but I dunno my score, because the birthdate form did something weird, and I closed the page.

You don't have to fill out that page in order to see your results. Next time just scroll to the bottom and submit, so you can just bypass it.

my results are 60%TOM and 100% control. i don't know what that infers, and the lack of good grammar in the test was distracting to me.

what does it mean?

100% on both, no problems. I might not have passed when I was younger, but nowadays I can navigate the grammar and keep each person's list of facts known in short-term memory long enough to compare them. It's still tricky, but totally doable. It's like a logic puzzle.

I begin to think that theory of mind problems among autistics may not, in fact, be theory of mind problems at all, but complex-language and multi-tasking problems. To solve problems like the one on the quiz, you have to be able to interpret relatively complex grammar, as well as mentally keep track of several sets of facts and edit those sets of facts as you get new information. This is not something an autistic "one-track" mind is particularly good at. Interpreting human actions, intentions, and knowledge are just where the language and mult-tasking becomes most complex, where the most possible dimensions are simultaneously in play; so it's where you can see the drawbacks of the autistic cognitive style the most easily.

Slight flaw in this story. Mary is still at the park when the ice cream van leaves. So surely she would know he isn't at the park selling ice cream - but there is no option that covers that in the answers.

this is trippy
