I've found that, as soon as I get a new novel, I open it up (in the middle of course) and take a big whiff, just to see what it smells like. I've found that different books have different scents; for example, The Lord of the Rings will smell different from Harry Potter, and both of these will smell different to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and all of these will smell different to Tommorow when the War Began! Anyone else do this sort of thing?

I've done that myself. I have noticed that the Bible has a distinct smell all its own.

Yeah I do that a lot, always with new books or new electronics. I sometimes take in the scent of old/used books, but I guess the fear of germs stops me usually.

I can even remember being a teenager and smelling newly opened trading cards.

"Smell this book."

Occasionally this will be heard at the library. There usually aren't any takers. Patrons return books with all kinds of funked up smells.

Don't take the time to, but certainly notice different odours.

Reminds me of a 'trick' which the famous physicist Richard Feynmann used to perform:
He would ask his guest to choose and read a few pages from any book out of his library, then replace it to the shelf (whilst he was out of the room). He would then return and 'sniff out' which book it was.
He didn't make it obvious how he managed to perform the feat, and supposedly won a few wagers.

I'm currently reading "The Pleasure Of Finding Things Out" by Feynman. The things he got upto and his intellect make me admire him very much.

the smell of books all depends on the chems and paper used. i just hate opening a book and it smells like a used toilet in quicky mart.

Oh, yes. There's one that I call "Scent of Cheaper By The Dozen and A Separate Peace" because it smells so good and distinct and reminds me of those two, two of my favs, by the way.
