So a friend of mine made an event on facebook for April (I'm helping host it) asking people to put up multicolored christmas lights for autism awarenesss month!

Quote:
""""THIS IS A MONTH LONG EVENT""""""""""""
Okay every year, autism speaks asks you to light it up blue for autism awareness. However I feel that this sets the wrong message for many reasons:

- Number one is that autism is a spectrum disorder and therefore, needs to be represented by more than just blue. To ONLY light it up blue would be like only showing one form of autism. Every individual with autism is unique and no two are exactly alike. Having the multicolored Christmas light will help depict how unique each one of our amazing children and each individual on the spectrum truly it.

- Number 2 is the autism ribbon is made up of multicolored puzzle pieces there for multicolored lights would better suit autism awareness.

Here is what you need to do:

On April 1st take out a set of multicolored Christmas lights. Hang them up in a window, you can leave them up all of April or just for a day or two. Be creative and try to form the shape of the awareness ribbon with them! If you don’t have multicolored Christmas lights then try changing any outdoor lights you have to multicolored bulbs

PLEASE HELP US SPREAD AWARENESS!! !! !! Autism isn’t just mild and it isn’t just severe; it is a spectrum it isn’t just blue!

PLEASE share photos of your Autism Awareness month decorations!

What do others think? I'm doing this! I love the idea

What comes to mind here for me is that while I bulked at the blue only lights - I also bulk at the multi colored Christmas lights. Many people in my area leave their Christmas lights up year round. So I do not see how putting up Christmas lights of any fashion is making anyone aware... especially for people who are clueless about autism. If they are clueless then how do they even know what the autism ribbon looks like?

I sure didn't before I became aware. I applaud the efforts and thoughts involved - but I do not see me hanging Christmas lights on my window. (by the way - I am one who enjoys my Christmas lights all year inside my home already because I love them)
