I love this idea, however here my inner nerd is in direct conflict with my practical side which screams: NO MORE NEEDLESS GOVERNMENT SPENDING!

That is not your practical side--that is your "heard to many anti-government argurments" side. This is precisely the kind of thing that government should be spending money on.

What else is government for, besides war?

If government didn't fund research, a lot of research simply wouldn't happen at all.

every dollar spent on the human genome project has brought back dozens of dollars to our economy. don't consider it an expenditure. consider it an investment, and a good one at that.

Funny thing is the actual whitehouse press release includes Autism as one of the items they wish to cure, but the news article edits this out.
