Or how do they ever? Is there a type that doesn't require as much patient participation?

In college, I was forced to go to therapy due to a suicide attempt. I stayed as long as I had to and then left. Alexithymia and disassociation make the process useless. Fast forward, I tried it again, same result. Then, again -- and quit for the same reasons.

Isn't there someone who is trained to deal with alexithymia?

I totally agree! I had therapy for five years and by the end, felt like I'd wasted a lot of people's time because I couldn't identify what i was feeling and it took two years to acknowledge that I was feeling anything at all. I tried it again two years later and had the same problem. I have an eating disorder and really want to sort it out but have no idea how to go about it. Would be really interested if anyone knows of any therapy that works with alexithymia and ASD.
