I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist who specializes in teens and children.

I was 13. He talked to me-just to get to know me. He talked to my parents. I made an angry out burst towards the end and stormed out-in my defense he said to me "You can storm out if you want." I sat still and upset with what he said. Then he said something I didn't like-I can't remember what it was-and I threw a tantrum and stormed out.

He told my parents I had aspergers syndrome-they had never heard of it till then and neither had I. And I was mad about that diagnosis. But it got me special attention in school so... but I still was furious that he would diagnose me with it. I rejected it. Till now. He then prescribed me medication (Risperdal) for the anger tantrums.

And you?

I wish I knew. Somewhere in a file cabinet down my stairs perhaps I could find out they're out of reach, but at least I know it was a speech-language pathologist, and a friend's sister is training as such. I was diagnosed at five y.o.a. and believe me, I drove stickshift across town to school, only to have the vice principals and educational aides hang a disabled parking permit in the middle of my worldview. I control my mind with simple herbalism, and wouldn't have it any other way.

Seeing I was an adult and chose the diagnostician myself, I know exactly who did it. He is a clinical psychologist who specialises in ASD and who had been under the supervision of a world expert in ASD. He had been recommended by that same world expert.

A neurologist specializing in ASDs. That plus diagnostic testing, including a MRI and EEG. I have some unusual features, including possible seizures, sensory integration disorder (e.g.: no McGurk effect for me), and virtually no sense of smell, so extra testing was indicated.

Also I'm seeing a therapist that specializes in ASDs because I have trouble with going to school and I really want to for senior year coming up and they agree I have it. So I guess that counts as like a second opinion.

Interesting everyone has seen different kinds of professionals.

It took mine more than one session to diagnose me. I don't know how many sessions it took him to say he would say I have a mild ASD. I would find that so skeptical if he diagnosed you over that outburst because to me it's bull and an arrogant doctor. There are things that need to be ruled out first. He diagnosed me with AS for closest match for a diagnoses and said I had very bad social skills and he seemed more concerned about that than my other traits and recommended I go into groups to work on my social skills so I was in group therapy. I liked the first one but hated the second one. He also specialized in autism so I assume he would know what he was talking about and he didn't diagnose me in the first session. He kept having me come back so he could talk to my parents some more and see me more. He also prescribed me a few medications and did follow ups on me after the diagnoses.

I was diagnosed a few months back at age 50 by an ASD specialist from the sheffield Aspergers service, which is linked to the Autism research department at Sheffield university. He works full time with nothing but Aspergers Syndrome patients :)

He was really good and knew exactly what to look for in me. It only took one two hour appointment with my mother to get a confirmed diagnosis! But then a properly trained and experienced expert can tell within half an hour if you are genuinely ASD or not. My mother thinks he knew after about 45 minutes, but he kept going with the appointment for another hour just to make absolutely sure :D

No it wasn't just because of the outburst it was also from talking to me. I was very awkward and went on about my favorite subjects and stuff and avoiding eye contact and told him about school and my life. And idk what my parents told him but I'm sure it contributes. He was already trying to tell them what was wrong just before I had the outburst. In fact it may have been what caused my outburst was the diagnosis.

You have an interesting story. :)

A psychiatrist who specializes in ASD.
I had started reading a thread about Asperger and autism by accident on another forum (about cats), and all of a sudden one piece after another slid into place for me, and finally I asked my mom if she thought I might be autistic/have aspergers.
I was 34, I went with my mom, he talked to both of us for about 30 min then said yeah, you are on the spectrum. I am still not sure if the diagnosis is for Aspergers or Autism, but as far as I'm concerned, the end result is the same. I get the help and support I need from the government.

I was diagnosed by a psychologist at my university who is familiar with ASDs. I had already suspected it for a while and finally decided to get diagnosed when I realized that I was having a harder and harder time communicating with my adviser about a project that I am working on.

I also have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist specialized in children and teens.

At first my mother brought me to a doctor because she thought I could have had schizophrenia but then I was diagnosed with AS and ADHD.
