Hi all,

I was curious about this, as I've just remembered something I was told (oh so long ago, after diagnosis) about Aspie/Autie walking differences to NT's.

Thanks for reading and your time.

Heel-toe. I used to walk toe-heel, but it was corrected with physiotherapy.

1) If the floor is comfortable and I'm barefoot, both heel and toe tend to hit the ground at the same time. I guess I'm Hobbit-like in that I find walking barefoot generally pleasant.

2) If the floor is cold or otherwise uncomfortable and I'm barefoot, I'll walk on my toes.

3) From a young age (if memory serves), I was told that Native American dancers put their feet down heel-toe when dancing, so I learned how to do this for fun.

I don't do much walking nowadays, and when I do my ankles are immobilized due to a joint condition... but I used to love walking on my toes. Sometimes I still do if my body allows it.

heel to toe

used to be toe to heel, especially going up stairs/downstairs which I loved, but I learned to walk correctly after I signed up for drama lessons (where we did lots of walking exercises where we were told to walk from heel to toe).

It varies, depending on what I'm doing and what types of shoes I'm wearing. Normally either flat or heel-toe. When I'm walking flat, though, I tend to put a lot of pressure on the balls of my feet. I wear boots if I'm going to be on my feet any length of time because I have high arches and it causes me a lot of pain if I have to stand around normally; I also tend to shift weight back and forth between feet when standing and this stresses my feet far worse than walking. I try to either be moving or sitting, not standing.

If barefoot, I tiptoe. With shoes, toe-heel. But I clicked "other."

Me?? I was hopping for most of my life till recently. What I
mean is that I walked on my toes. I never touched the heel
of my shoe to the ground. I was always hopping around like
a bunny. I have more control now. I saw a occupational
therapist when I was 9 years old. If I am nervous and worried,
I can still hop with my toes.

Re: the walking on the balls of the feet. Do they know why some autistic folk have a tendency to do this?

In bare feet I walk toe and ball of feet. All my toes scrunch and i basically tiptoe with a sense of disgust because of the feeling of the soles of my feel touching the ground/floor surfaces. ahgahgghghgh.
in shoes I walk normally.

I don't like my feet touching the floor either. I always wear flip flops or shoes.

Both ways. I never noticed that. I have flat feet that will fall off any day now.
When I was younger I used to get constantly told to lift my feet when I walked. I used to just slide them along the ground.

I walk on my balls too. I often scare the bejeezus out of co-workers when I enter their office because walking this way can make very little sound. I've learned to do either a little shuffle step or key jingle before crossing the doorway now.
