Hi everyone! I've written another blog post. This one's a review of Frozen, in which I talk about many things, including how the Frozen story is a resounding metaphor for Aspergers and autism.

http://www.lunalindsey.com/2014/02/refl ... ew-of.html

This review is mildly spoilery, because I describe some of the opening situations and go into some character development and thematic elements. I do not reveal how the main plots threads are resolved.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend you do. If you have (or if you don't mind mild spoilers), read my post and comment either there, or here.

Thanks!

Jamgirl, how have you been?

I couldn't understand your essay, because your writing style in that article is 180 degrees out of phase with the way I think.

Good to hear from you again.

Omg, you are awful! Your writing is too interesting, so now I'm reading your blog instead of sleeping!
All joking aside, it was a good review, and now I'm going to go back to reading your other stuff.

When I was reading this, I related to the movie Frozen in the exact same way. I felt as if I could relate to Elsa because she was always hiding who she was because she believed that something was wrong with her. I've often felt the same way being an Aspie.

I haven't seen frozen (or read Jamgrrl's essay yet), but this sound like every disney movie ever made. LoL

Funny, just recently I heard a lesbian say that the song "Let It Go" is a "coming out song". :) So I guess in her mind Frozen is a metaphor for being gay!

Hey JSBACHlover! I'm sorry you couldn't get into it. I start out being all philosophical and going all Joseph Campbell about narratives and story. :) Maybe that's why?

Emiruko, lol. Glad you find it interesting. I hope you get to the Splines Theory post. That's still my favorite and I want everyone with Asperger's to read it.

wozeree, good to see you again. Frozen actually went farther than other Disney movies. They rook some risks it they paid off big. I'd seen them start to head this direction with Tangled and Brave. Only moreso. The ice metaphor was pretty perfect, because it's vague enough to project onto, but specific enough to have a reason to project. I highly recommend you see it. :)

Davvo7 & Einfari, thanks! :)

FMX: Yep. As I point out in my post, Frozen is a good mirror because lots of marginalized people see themselves in Elsa, especially in that song. I related to it on a number of levels, not just autism (like leaving the religion I was raised in).

I kinda read it. It was interesting, but I'm not quite sure I understood what you meant. Probably because my mind wants to skim over long stuff right now for some reason. I'll try to give it another read later. :o

Hehe, I know the feel: TL;DR.

And I tend to write really long. That's my aspie tendencies.. I feel compelled to include EVERY THOUGHT I EVER HAD. ;)

My preconceived notion of the movie was that, oh no, another movie of snotty characters like "Over the Hedge", or goofy exaggerated characters meant to keep kids interest.

My daughter wanted to take her friends to the movie for her birthday, so to keep an eye on things, I went too.

Wow, was I wrong. I really liked it, especially the scene where she makes her castle out of ice.

Oh and bonus - unlike many other Disney movies, no super uber evil b***h woman character. Nice change.

No, that's cool. I can't even write at all really. It is an ordeal to even write a paragraph for me. I can write as if I was talking, but creative writing is not gonna happen. It's really neat that you are good at it. :)
Also, I love reading, but apparently I am scatterbrained today. I think that's my brain telling me to go play video games for a while instead of obsessively reading everything on the internet.

Yeah, it's good to take a break. I find myself doing all kinds of things obsessively and then not taking any breaks until I'm a space case.

It's just a question of style. When I write, I write concretely with very little verve. Often I will use one analogy, but that's all. Your writing, to me, feels "bouncy." I couldn't stay on the trampoline of your find and I fell off very quickly.

This is a very interesting article... I'm still trying to work out how AS and homosexuality relate, but still interesting. This may be the reason I'm kind of aspie-style obsessing over this movie; I've seen it four times and counting since January, and already have some of the music on my ipod (this from a person who almost never buys music). I think I love it so much because I relate to Elsa in the "being different in a simultaneously good and bad way" kind of sense, and I know how she feels when Anna tries to help her and fix things, but she has no idea what it's like to be Elsa, so she has no way of helping in a useful manner. I made a post here about a month ago that looked at Elsa's freak-out where she froze Anna's heart as a metaphorical aspie meltdown, complete with swirling snow to gauge the strength of her emotion. At my age it's a little embarrassing to be obsessed by a Disney princess movie, but I can't help it :) It's coming out on DVD on March 18th and I plan to get it once it's here (another rarity for a person who never buys anything but dinosaur documentaries!)
