Paediatrician?
Psychologist?
Family MD?

Also how old were you?

Self diagnosed individuals need not answer.

Not that there's a problem with being self diagnosed (i am), I just want to know how people were professionally diagnosed.

After 3 years my son finally has an appt with a paediatrician, I'm hoping this is taking us in the right direction.

I believe I was officially diagnosed by someone working at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, back when I was 6. I'm not 100% sure if it was a psychologist or a paediatrician, but I certainly wasn't diagnosed by a small town family doctor. My parents and teachers knew I was "different" before I was diagnosed, though I wasn't confirmed to be an aspie once and for all until that fateful trip to Edmonton.

To be honest, I remember that trip quite fondly. I thought that the Glenrose was a really cool place, and seeing Edmonton and all the cool stuff in it for the first time amazed me. I actually kind of wish I had a reason to go back and spend more time there.

I diagnosed myself at the age of 20. I held onto the suspicion that I had AS until I was 27 and encountered my current therapist. He was the first mental health professional I encountered who had personal experience with people on the spectrum. When I mentioned that I thought I had AS, he said he thought I had a mild case of AS. He is a Licensed Psychologist. He has a Ph.D. in Psychology and over 20 years experience.

I am 29. I got just got diagnosed (the last appointment was two weeks ago, I got the report today). I was diagnosed by a clinical psychologist (PhD in psychology).

She was not an expert in autistic conditions, but she was completely honest about that and all the appointments we had were very constructive and relevant. She did a great work and overall I think she was just a really good psychologist :) And in my opinion it is more important than diplomas or even being considered an "expert". Unfortunately that is not something you can easily control.

My official diagnosis was done by a neuropsychologist at age 22. Until then we could make due without it being officially done, at that point, we couldn't make due anymore, so got it done.

I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist at age 13, when I was just about to turn 14. He was an expert in children with PDDs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health( CAMH). Also, I recently asked the psychologist that I'm seeing now to re-assess me to see if I met the new DSM criteria for ASD and she said I did. That was at age 28. She's not a specialist in ASDs but has experience with adolescents with Asperger's. She mostly does anxiety and mood disorders.

I was diagnosed by my doctor at age 14 or 15. He was too chicken to ask me in for an appointment, he just called my parents and said: "Congrats, your child is an aspie. be sure to tell him before he moves out lol, have a nice day ha". I now have a different doctor.
Apparently he knew because my parents answered his aspie quiz for me and I passed the aspie quiz. *huuray*

someone told me I might be and then when I was assaulted and started having more problems dealing and acting out than before I spoke to my therapist and she recommended a psychologist who did (I had to go private pay, my own insurance would have forced me to see a certain psychiatrist who I did not like)

I'm currently in the middle of my diagnosis, and am having it done by a doctoral student with a master's in psychology at my school campus psychological services center. She is being observed by a doctor with a Ph.D in psychology who has published many papers, at least one of which was on AS, and which I have read, so even if my evaluator is not up to snuff (though she seems to know what she's doing) she has an expert to fall back on, which I'm pleased about.

I was long term observed by a psychological and cognitive behavioural therapist and was fully diagnosed officially by a psychological therapist at the age of 24. I didn't seek counceling for any autism spectrum disorder, but it was sprung onto me during sessions recuperating from extreme stress.

That eventually lead to other neurological referrals for diagnosing Tourette's, chronic migraines and the professional go ahead to self-diagnose as Dyslexic/Dyspraxic from my observations and physical assessments.

And thus a very extensive professional network raised with a councilor, occupational therapist, visual occupational therapist, community occupational therapist, neurologist, social workers, disability working advisors and adult care accessors.

Plus awaiting radiologists for MRI, neuro physiotherapists And whoever else is in the system.
