Many times when I see an image of something online, I can't even figure out what I am looking at. Usually it takes me about 30-60 seconds to figure out what it is, but sometimes it still just looks like a bunch of weird shapes. What is the reason for this?

Poor photography, sometimes!

I find that if the shot is taken too close to something I can't make out what it is either..
