There are at least 100,000,000,000 stars per galaxy ( the current estimate is much higher). There are at least 100,000,000,000 galaxies. Therefore there are 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars at the bare minimum.
Suppose that one out of 100,000,000,000 stars has a planet revolving around it that has a civilization (a very very conservative estimate) that means that there are at least 100,000,000,000 planets with civilizations!! !! !

This thread has established a few things it seems to me.

1) There are theorists and there are denialists. And never the twain shall meet...

2) The theorists are in the majority here.

3) The denialists centrally rely on "there is no scientific evidence" and some stretch that to imply that therefore anyone who foresees new evidence being found in the future is foolish.

4) The theorists centrally rely on the fact that science moves forward by exploring scientific frontiers in the search for evidence, and frontiers typically start with theory not evidence.

There are many examples of (4) and on numerous occasions, frontier theorists have been dismissed, ridiculed, persecuted, hounded out of their professions and even killed. This is called The Semmelweis Reflex, in honour of the man who suggested that doctors' hygiene was important to stop the spread of unknown and harmful organisms that we now all know to be germs...

Somewhere out there are some aspie aliens sitting around wondering if cats could have evolved anywhere else in the universe.

Not enough, the shelters where I live are full all the time and many are put to sleep.

:(

yes, same all over.

I've taken in two more this year for a total of 5 rescues.

If the aliens are cousins to the cats, then they should love me.

This seems to be the second most oft quoted mantra from the skeptics handbook.....
(the first being show me the evidence)

The question of relevancy is highly subjective. If you are referring to Maslow's hierarchy of needs then yes, food, shelter etc is going to be far more important than the existence of little grey aliens...but given most of us have that bit covered we have some time to kill...

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

An abduction and anal probing is an extraordinary claim.

However, due to our improved knowledge base, the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence is not really an extraordinary claim anymore.

Perhaps people confuse this.

If the aliens take me with them, then I will insist on them also taking all the stray/homeless cats too. They can play with holographic toys and dart about in zero-G.
