Hi everyone, babybird here,

I'm going back to work next week.

I've been at my job for nearly two years, and two weeks ago I walked out.

I just came to a point where I couldn't do it anymore. I told my boss that I had reached the end of the line with it and then I just left. He was fine about it really but then there wasn't much else he could do to be honest.

Anyway, on Monday this week I woke up and I felt much better, like I could probably cope again. I phoned my boss and he said that I probably just needed time out and he said it's fine for me to go back next week.

I am going back and I'm sort of looking forward to it.

The question in my mind is though: Should I talk to my boss in private and explain about the aspergers as I believe I have experienced some kind of breakdown/meltdown/shutdown type thingy?

This sort of thing has happened in every job I have had and in the past I haven't been so fortunate that I have been allowed back.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance. :)

I would say it was related to a home life issue/etc, and that its under control now.

If he thinks that you will be difficult to manage/unpredictable in a permanent way, he might start to consider how to reduce his potential workload, you must be a good employee to be given another chance.

I think it might be worth trying to work out exactly why you got to the point where you couldn't go on. I don't know whether it would be good or bad to tell your boss about it, that depends on the particular boss and the kind of pressures he's under, and on company policy and maybe local employment law, but at least if you understand the specifics in terms of the job and the traits (I'm assuming it was ASD that floored you), then you might be able to find a way of avoiding it happening again. And if you do decide to share it with your boss, at least you'll be able to give him hope that as long as a few specific adjustments are made, the problem will be over.

If he asks for details you should. It might be difficult to figure out if he is indirectly asking for details.

Well there's been a turn of events and I wont be going back after all.

I heard word today that everyone has been laid off. I have had confirmation of this as well because I actually thought it was a wind up at first.

I'm in shock to be honest.

Oh well, that circumvents the problem at least. Any redundancy pay likely?

Sounds like the USA. In the UK, I think 2 years service would normally entitle the jobholder to some compensation, though the bosses are eager to abolish the whole thing.

But it's not very much unless you've been there a long time.

Anyway, I guess that doesn't help you. What's next, benefits?

I am in the UK but I've not quite been there for two years.

I will have to sign on anyway. Just so that I can get housing benefit really.

I would say to not talk about your Asperger's up front but first maybe try to "chit chat" with your boss and get to that topic and get his opinion on it. If he seems to be an open guy, then it shouldn't go bad if you inform him. However do not use it as an excuse. Employers do not like people who use their disability as an excuse for everything. Some employers will show a little empathy for your situation, some will not treat you any differently, some are heartless prick but one thing they all don't like is being used and being treated like an idiot.

Babybird, sounds like you leaving that job was just meant to be. I hope things work out okay for you.

Yes I think you are right there. I have had a phone call today from someone who I used to work with and they have set me up with an interview next week.

So unless I make a major f**k up it looks quite promising.

Thanks for all your support everyone. :D
