I usually spend several hours a day using a computer, mostly for the internet but recently quite a lot for gaming. The fact that I'm restricted to 40GB per month by my service provider probably prevents me spending even more time on it.

I've been addicted to the Internet since late 1997. There are days that the Internet has been an essential part of my daily life for almost 20 years. There are days that I sit there and wonder what computers and the Internet will be like, 20 years from now.

I'm not always glued to my computer. Sometimes I'm away from it and glued to the internet on my phone

I didn't think so until someone pointed this out to me recently. I was whinging about pain in my fingers, and she commented that maybe it's RSI, as I am apparently always typing.
For me it's a symptom, an indicator, of how badly I'm doing. If I'm doing well, life is stimulating, I have enough to occupy my mind and enough to do, I am hardly ever online. The worse things get, the more they slow down, the less I have to satiate my constantly spinning mind, the more I compensate with the Internet. A least then I can read, learn new things, get information to hatch new schemes about how to change things, find data to fuel lists.
Right now, I am online WAY too much, as life is basically at a standstill. I'm trying to fix that.

<--- Computer addict. Uses his computer to watch TV using TV/FM tuner (news, mostly), listen to music, maintain his collection of symphonies, tone poems and piano sonatas from the Romantic era, connect with the world (WP and Jain Society of Seattle), get his mail (Yahoo), see what's going on in the world (Seattle Times, CNN, Newsweek, etc), download records and movies, watch movies, edit videos, make music using Cubase and various software synths, write short stories, screenplays, novels and poems, and maintains his blog, play Scrabble and other games like Metro Last Light, Borderlands, Deus Ex, etc., read PDFs on his special interests (church organs, Jainism, methods of execution and torture throughout the ages), purchase stuff (Amazon, Newegg, etc), and other stuff. Very important, indeed.

Wow, redrobin62. How long does a computer last you? A keyboard last you? A mouse?

I use up one laptop and just get another. I have access to used ones for between $100 and $150. (Maybe the fact they are used, is one reason they don't last too long.)

I think the time I spend online is "just right" but it can increase if I'm actually feeling extremely stressed out or overwhelmed about something. Then, my executive functioning worsens and be it computer time or playing games on my tablet or even just watching TV, I get stuck on the activity for arguably too long.

The rest of the time, I think my computer time is fine.

Today for example, I've been online quite a bit, but I've also:

-- Gathered up everything that needs to be washed, and done two loads of laundry

-- Hand washed several dishes, coffee mug, flatware etc

-- Cleaned my bathroom sink

-- Read some of a book I bought yesterday

-- Gone on a mile and half round-trip walk to a heathland where I feed and document a regular flock of rock dove pigeons and a regular gang of carrion crows.

Yet on and off I've spent "all day" online! So I dunno, I think my balance in my activities is pretty good even though it may look like I've been here all day.

I'm often at my computer(s), too. Pretty much everything I like is there: games, study material, music. I found that having a few things to do at home like watering plants or cooking simple music is a nice break without requiring too much energy. I also plan on getting a bird (budge or cockatiel) a few months after I move into my new apartment and they're social birds, so I'll have a little companion who needs my time.

I don't have anything else to do and this is a connection to outside world sad as it is, I spend a lot of time on the computer. I stare boredly at the computer pressing f5 way too much, it's mind numbing I hate it.

@BeaArthur - you made me smile. Yeah, you're right. Computers seem to last me an average of 4 years. A lot of the times, though, it was because I spilled beer on the keyboard and ruined the electronics within.

It's also interesting being a computer addict and Jain: I can't live without my computer but Jainism teaches aparigraha, that is, possessing nothing and being attached to nothing are virtues. Conflicted, indeed.

I hope one day my (future, one can dream) girl will be all I need.

Don't wanna crap on that. Buuuuuttttt.....

Even the dream person will not fill any voids. If anything, it will cause more friction in your life until that person and yourself work out the crazy little things that it takes to make a relationship work. And, frankly, that is what any relationship is. HARD WORK!! And, we make it MUCH harder LOL

But, it does make things better IF you find the right person. AND!! You must work at it. It ain't easy no matter how good the fit. And, nobody can be the dream person in all areas.

^ Ha! No worries, that's not what I meant. It very much looks like "dream girl", I know.
But I don't believe in this Hollywood stuff.

According to yourbrainonporn.com the plan of overcoming porn addiction involves stopping the addictive behavior for a period of time and then rewiring the brain from artificial to natural stimuli.
Or in other words from porn to real people.
What I was getting at is that the chances of finding someone to have sex with are somewhat low for me (hence "one can dream"), so I won't be able to rewire for the time being.
But would be nice to have someone...
