ever notice how autism speaks always only mentions kids with autism?

never the adults or teenagers?

it seems to me that they think you use autism as a excuse sometimes.

i mean i dont go around telling people about my autism.

but wouldnt you say that people are at the point where they think when ur a adult you can socialize fine, not have trouble speaking.

i still have trouble socializing to this day.

i rarely join in conversation.

feel free to have discussion in this post because this is important tbh.

It's easier to solicit donations when you can trot out pictures of sad-eyed kids then when pictures of angry-faced adults are used.

Autism Speaks is a money-collecting organization. Roughly four percent of the money they collect actually goes to people with autism. The rest is sucked up by various "administrative" costs.

Because most people are uneducated about autism. As for people that are supposed to be educated about disabilities, it's easier to ignore a problem than to do something about it.

I agree with this, and not unique to autism charities and government programs--a lot of charity funds for disabled people focus on kids (e.g., Easter Seals, March of Dimes) but don't talk much about providing services for adults with chronic issues (MS, cerebral palsy, ALS).

I think also that providing services for adults is a more complex issue. Children can be controlled by parents, but adults, even disabled adults, can make their own decisions and bring up messy issues of consent, whether they should be under legally mandated care, independence, healthcare, safety, and sex. Service providers need to listen to the care receiver's needs and negotiate a customized approach, preferably treating the care receiver as a willing partner, all something that requires thought, planning, and sensitivity.

Many adults also fall into a grey area. They are able to live independently and don't need constant care like in an assisted living situation, but still struggle to deal with employment, health issues, physical safety, and keeping up with the bills and household chores. These may not meet the criteria for receiving government-funded aid, but clearly need a little help. I think we need to find ways to create different levels of help based on different levels of ability. Some may just need some job coaching or help with organizing chores. Others may need more extensive support transitioning to adulthood, but eventually can become more independent with training.

This.

Auti$m $peaks does not care about Autistics, they only care about using us to rake in money from their "pity porn" (not my term) campaign.

Because all the young parents are worried about their children and their children's futures. The adults are already lost causes. And we aren't cute, as has been said.

Yeah....we're always "gonna be" autistic

But people with no legs will always be people with no legs.

People with Down Syndrome will always be people with Down Syndrome

Etc, Ad Nauseum!

It doesn't stop many people from adjusting to their condition, thinking of themselves as people rather than the condition and making progress despite their condition.

well i mean yeah.

these things improve but wont be perfect or go away.

but like they make us feel like we dont exist and dont care what we have to say, they sure dont make it easy for us and but its easy for them.

but still people just sometimes dont really care what we have to say.

i mean people can do that to other people but it seems not often and they do it more to us it seems.

they make it sound like were *normal* which is not true. sorry if im making no sense to you.

That's why you have to show the "regular" people that you are somebody.

You can't give in right away. You have to fight (though fight nicely).

There are many ways of doing that.

Doing well in school is one of them.

What are your favorite things to do, and your "special interest"

What do you like to do when you're not in school?

You like watching Anime? Or reading about science?

I understand you're upset about your diagnosis. But it's not a death sentence for anybody. Many people with autism succeed. Autism just makes it more difficult.

well the first thing i like doing is playing a game called toontown rewritten.

toontown was a disney game.

it was basically a mmo game that came out in 2003.
the game lasted 10 years then shut down september 19th 2013.

many kids and adults play this game so dont judge.

and the second thing i like doing is playing another game made by a company kingsisle.
it was called wizard101.

LOL.....how can I judge if I've never heard of these games.

I'm an oldster. I go back to Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner.

It's cool that you like these games; I bet many people like those games. That's the way you can show that you are a viable person....by hanging out with people playing those games.

Did you know that there's a "games" section of WrongPlanet?
