Do you ever laugh at yourself when you say something dumb?

It's a really good way to cope with the fact that I'm awkward. When I say something stupid, don't immediately understand sarcasm, or tell a crappy joke, normally people would give me a bad reaction. However, when I laugh at myself and say something like "yeah, I shouldn't have said that" or when for a bad joke, "nobody?" (commenting on that nobody laughed) people laugh along. People seem to like to be with me more. I'm not really laughing at myself in a "laughing at me" kind of way, but rather in more of a "laughing with me" kind of way. It's improved my self-esteem, and allows me to recover when I say the wrong thing. Does anyone else do this?

Sure I do.

I also think of ways of making my dumb statement seem smart in retrospect.

I do with my own family, because we're all hilariously dysfunctional.

With my (ex) in-laws it was harder, because they were constantly laughing at me, for my inability to do anything right. I was basically a joke to them, and that got old after a while.

"If we can't laugh at ourselves, others will beat us to it."

Answer yes. It helps me taking myself to seriously.

I pretty much always do but that's because people are so used to me saying things that are over their heads*, when I say something dumb** it is usually: a) really, really dumb and/or b) so bizarre, unexpected and dumb that it even catches me off guard and I have to laugh at it.

*not necessarily brilliant, just...over their heads. As in, floating about the room and racing clouds. Sometimes solving the discussed problem but in an unusual way, or just makings an unexpected but true observation about the topic.

**which usually happens quite often. Sometimes multiple times a day with the same people. I have that whole "absent minded" social persona down pat...inadvertently.

I tend to get frustrated with myself because I know I can do better.
