Well, i made an appointment to get diagnosed for AS. Well, at least for my first consultation. I'm not really sure what's going to happen. Any advice? Anything i should make sure i tell them, or any questions i should ask? When i called to make the appointment, i told them i wanted to talk to someone who specifically handled Asperger's. After being put on hold a few times, she finally told me that she spoke with one of the doctors, and he said that most of them had some experience with it. I just have a feeling that "experience" means they heard about it once or twice in med school. what should i do if this is the case?
The lady on the phone kind of doubted that i had it from what i could tell. She said i sounded "coherent", and kept asking me why i thought i had it. WTF does coherent have to do with it? I may not know alot, but i think we can all at least get through a basic sentence. Needless to say, it's a little discouraging.

Yeah,that does not bode well.....we are coherent.My DR said I didnt have it because I could cmmunicate...

I would look in your local autism support group web site for a list of recommended specialist.Being "familiar" with some thing from reading the DX manuel is not the same thing as being a specialist in adult DX(which is more difficut then childhood DX,as we have learned to modify some behaviors).

Is there anyone in your famiy who has a good memory of what you were like when you were a kid?This tends to be very important in making the DX in adults,and some DRs wont even give a DX without this imput...some will.

Good luck to you.When I went in I wrote out each question in the RDOS aspie quiz and answered it based on my understanding of what was being asked(they are a bit vague).I answered as to if they did or did not apply to me in my present life and my childhood(very important).I know this isnt a perfect test but I think it covers a lot of ground and gave me a format to work with.
It ended up being 20 pages of notes and the DR said it was helpful.

Spooky. I got a call from the local mentall health team today, they had a copy of the letter I wrote to my GP to explain why I think I have AS, and they said that at that stage, they were inclined to agree with myself and the GP. The man I spoke to said that they will be in touch very soon to arrange the assesment. Was so happy spent I don't know how long flappin' and stimmin' out of sheer relief.
Anyway, I think what helped was that I wrote down everything I do or did that has a relevance to the DX, not just from my viewpoint, but also from my parents. (behaviours etc.) I wil take this with me again to refer to, as saying things out loud is not always as easy as writing them down.

Coherent is one of the serotypes, which is completely wrong. wtf has it go to do with the lady over the phone? She's just the person making the appointment. Does she have and medical background? Even if she does that is very unprofessional. You need to seek a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist to get a diagnosis. Though you might need a referral first.

That sounds good.I am glad someone is listening to you.After spending most of our lives having our "senses" denied as "real" it
is a relief for someone to say...hey,this is real,your real and there are other people having smiliar experiences.I just wish they offered adults more assistance after getting the DX.This is one of my future "goals".There are services for people with CD/alcohol issues and some(not enough)for those with mental health issues....we are being over-looked so that the big money raisers can pretend that HFA doesnt exist...only LFA,which needs to be exterminated... .We are an "inconvenient truth".


I have to have everythign written out when dealing with people....they ask me something "abstract" and I just freeze up,not helpful.

I'm guessing the doctor she asked about it asked if i seemed coherent. Before that, i dont think she had a clue what it was. I called the phsyciatric clinic that was refered to me by my insurance provider.

I did one online and it said i scored a 32 or above out of 50, which was considered a possibility for AS. They gave me a 99% or above chance in my age group and gender, although i dont know what credibility that holds.

The test you took is I gather somewhat controversial. There's another one that is a lot more thorough (& has a lot more questions, though I found them so interesting it didn't bug me). I'd take a look at it if I were you. Here it is:

Well, i went in today. She agreed with me for the most part. I did most of the talking though. I'm going to a couple theropy sessions to try it out. she mentioned that i may also have anxiety, but they could possibly be related
