It could be the result of a genetic mutation.

It could be a part of another disorder, such as Fragile X Syndrome.

It could be the result of anoxia (no oxygen to the brain) at birth (Yes, I knew somebody who was severely autistic who had anoxia at birth).

I don't believe it's caused by environmental factors after the perinatal (around the actual birth) period, though I do believe something environmental could turn somebody with a predisposition to autism without autism, to someone with autism.

The cause is cold neural weather. It causes one to grow hairy dendrites.

Genetic.
Up until very recently, though, almost no one with Asperger's (HFA, level one, whatever) even got diagnosed. The world was just full of weirdos, eccentrics, and loners. There were loads of momma's boys and old maids who never left the family farm. We've always been here, we just have a new label now.

Probably something in our genetics but I do think environment definitely influences it(which may be be the difference between a diagnosis and not for some)

Genetic mutation, environmental factors like radiation, chemicals, drugs, pollution, smoking, parental age, and more.

Don't believe those autism pride groups that claim it is 100% genetic and has existed in its current form unchanged, from no mutation since the beginning of time. There are 60 mutations on average for each human being born and there are more than ever uncontrolled environmental factors we can't keep track of.

I don't know about classic autism but with Asperger it's both genetic and environmental, with enviorement decdeing what traits will activate.
I would probably be way better now if my father were normal(he has issues but refuses to get diagnosed), someone prevented the bullying I received way since preschool, if I wasn't a latchkey kid and if I lived with my grandma. My family house was very chaotic and at grandma house there were set rules that had a point and grandma could explain them to me. I was a good kid at grandma but constantly punished at home.
