I just realized that I've been moody and on edge for hours (and having multiple small seizures that are normal indications of stress for me personally) just because I had to listen to my mother vacuum earlier. do you have similar issues? it's been nearly four hours and between the phone ringing a few times and the washing machine buzzer going off I'm still jerking around and rather irate.

I hate the sound of vacuum cleaners. When I was a kid I'd have instant, extreme meltdowns whenever a vacuum was turned on around me. Today it takes more exposure to the sound than it used to, but the feeling of panic and rage is instantaneous -- it's painful, awful sound. When I have to vacuum, I do so with earplugs in, and I do it in pieces because if I try to do all the vacuuming at once it still results in meltdowns. I also wear earplugs when people are vacuuming elsewhere in the house. Ideally I would live somewhere with no carpets so I could sweep instead of vacuuming.

They are far too noisy.

For what it's worth, I hate carpets as well. From my point of view, there is no need for vacuum cleaners -- let's get rid of the carpets instead.

We don't vacuum in my house. My mother bought a vacuum over a year ago and never took it out of the box. I don't know why.

The reason I didn't take it out when she didn't is because I have a phobia about plugging things into outlets. It would probably scare my cat too.

I remember once at the age of 15 being away from home and having someone expect me to vacuum and I didn't know how. I just turned it on and let it sit there because I knew that they would get mad and not believe me if I said I didn't know how. I vaguely remember us having a canister vacuum as a small child but never an upright vacuum.

I like the way they take the dirt from the floor, (mites faeces, dirt from the street, shed skin scales and the like), and then they sort of shred it up and spit it out so that instead of just being on the floor, its now everywhere, even in your lungs, what do you think that disgusting smell is when a vacuum cleaner is used, especially the old ones belonging to people who dont even take them apart to clean the insides.

Nambo, thanks for that lovely image!

I can't stand the sound of the vacuum, so I have my headphones on at a very loud volume to drown it out. It's not so bad when I'm using it though, because I have time to prepare myself first for the noise.

It's annoying because I am the only one who cleans our house. The stairs get very dirty because one of my housemates does rugby and always tracks lots of dirt in. She completely ignores the mat I have put at the front door. Our kitchen is tiled so I usually sweep and mop it, but sometimes its hard to get rid of the dust in the gaps between the tiles, so occasionally I use the hoover for that.

Unless you have one from the ark, surely they usually have filters for the expelled air!

I have never been bothered by vacuum cleaners.
I even loved being around when our first was in use because it had a special smell that I really liked.

I really dislike them. They do not sound good to me.

You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

I liked putting my hand on the end of the hose and feeling the suction.

The fact I don't do it now, even when alone, is because I learned other people would think it's weird, and 'of course you MUST be normal'.

I used to do that too. The reason I quit? Sometimes a beetle or spider would get sucked in and I was afraid they were just inside and could get on my hand if I held it there!

I like vacuum cleaners and the job they do. Most are quite loud and that becomes tiresome after a bit.

I can definitely understand how they could be a major annoyance to many people. What grinds my gears is walking to close to one of those gas-powered leaf blowers. Deafening.

I vacume the vechile twice a year and thats it for useing one, I hate the sound of someone using one and am afraid of sucking up things that are not suppost to go in there as I have did that before. I like brooms better.
