Sometimes in the beginning of this year, I started to be interested in psychopathy. But it was never a positive kind of interest. Sometimes, I looked for signs and behavior patterns for hours in the internet. And the internet is known for contradicting informations. So I started to develop a fear of being manipulated or even worse things. Because after all, at least 1% of the general population is believed to be a psychopath.

Does anyone of you have similar experiences with obsessions you didn‘t want to have? How did you get rid of these thoughts? Thank you in advance!

I deal with this quite frequently. Most of my interests are positive, but some start positive and end up negative. Over the last couple of years, I've had to resort to forcing myself to take breaks from one interest and pursue another for a day or two to avoid pushing a positive interest into a negative one. I've even had to create 'calendars' of which board game I will play online for which days in order to strive for some type of balance. This tends to only work for a month or two at the most before I feel the urge to pursue one of my interests exclusively for several months at a time. It would seem that my brain is just hardwired to need a single interest. The old adage about 'everything in moderation' has a lot of wisdom behind it, but that doesn't mean it's easy for me to live that way.

I would say that most of my interests are very positive (animals, tennis, people who have overcome great odds to succeed), but I have some obsessions based on fear or worry. I want to get rid of those and hang on to the positive ones.

One time I looked up information about how the mind of a (non-drug-or-alcohol-influenced) murderer/serial killer works. I wasn't obsessed as such, I was just wondering why they do such nasty, evil things like that. It was just curiosity.

I've had obsessions with porn & both my exes after we had broken up(I've had other bad obsessions but those were kinda the worse). Taking the med Neurontin/Gabapentin for OCD helps & so does having a girlfriend & other life stuff to focus on.

Possibly the subject of autism and disability issues in general are very much on my mind. I have been researching autism since I was in sixth grade and Asperger syndrome since 1997, when I first read about it. I was convinced I had AS to some degree because a lot of the features described me.
