Auditory hypersensitivity is very common among people with ASD.
Abnormal hypersensitivity, low tolerance for auditory sensory stimuli,
inability to focus on one sensory source while placed in a environment that is busy (has more than one source)
The name audiologists use for low tolerance is misophonia.
I have not yet found an official term for inability to filter out sensory information.

The cocktail effect may be the term you are looking for if only used for sound. It is the ability to focus in on one person in crowded room and filter everybody else out, such as at a cocktail party. This is something I cannot do. I hear everybody in the room at the same level.

I get really disturbed by sounds, the swithboard at work, and ventilation, the kitchen klock at home, and the fridge. Strangely I don't mind the buzzing from the heating system.

For me, it is ALL of the quiet or soft or little sounds. I usually have a secondary sound source to drown out all of those little noises. Without that secondary sound source, I am able to hear a cat walk across a carpeted floor, clothes brushing up against each other with every body movement, the fan in the refrigerator, the guy down the street working on his roof, a clock ticking, breathing, and so on.
The funny thing is that when I go outside, nature provides so many different noises that I am able to not hear the little sounds. BTW, I love going outside and being with nature.
