Have you found a way to explain to people why you need time with your special interests or why they are so important to you?

Not a way that works for every person. If a person seems genuinely interested in getting to know me as a person I might explain my interests and why they are so important to me. But if they are critical or judgmental person then I don't bother trying to make them understand.

Just out of interest. Are there a specific people who you would like to understand this ?

I usually explain that I need to be in a meditative state or in isolation when I am pursuing my special interests, such as making lists obsessively. A lot of people don't understand it though, but I have found it helps to say that it grounds me in a spiritual way.

"I enjoy it!" or "I think it's fun!" or "It's what I want to do!" or....

Same reason I like vanilla ice cream, root beer, BBQ,...

Same reason I like music by Steve Roach or Bach or Beethoven...

Same reason I like Red Dwarf, Red Green, Max Headroom, Babylon 5....

etc.

What I like is what I like and what they like is what they like.

I gave up trying to explain it some time ago.

It would be like me trying to understand why NT's like chattering about nothing and generally making pointless noise.

Nobody seems even curious. However, my special interests do have broad relevance to helping others.

I tell people that my interests make me happy.
