There's a plugin called Social Fixer that allows the user to block a lot of the unwanted crap that Facebook churns out. It's a bit nerdy to fine-tune, but it does ultimately work. It's capable of blocking any post containing user-defined key words. It doesn't make Facebook perfect, but personally I wouldn't use Facebook at all without it, it would be a horrible experience. There are one or two other plugins that do much the same thing, though I have no experience of them.
Doesn't work well on smartphones though.
There are also switches in Facebook's own settings that allow a degree of control over what you get. Some of them are helpful.
