I was just informally diagnosed with autism yesterday. I have schizophrenia, and I was talking to my pdoc about a potential ASD diagnosis. I've long lived with traits of ASD, but never put two and two together. Well, he did a very short assessment and diagnosed me. I'd like to get tested at the local major university, where they have a more rigorous assessment. Just to get a second opinion. But yeah, just thought I would share

Hi Zeke1,

I also have schizophrenia and have just been diagnosed with autistic disorder. I've always recognized that I've had ASD traits but the pursuit of a diagnosis has always slipped underneath the radar for me too. A university is a great place for rigorous testing, especially if the university is a premier university in your country/province/state. It can be a great alternative to a private psychological or neuropsychological evaluation and it may be lower cost out of pocket if you don't have medical insurance or your insurance won't cover an autism evaluation. Private insurance or state (public) insurance of course does not matter if your country has universal healthcare! Second opinions are always great and more thorough testing can give you even more insight into your psychological/neuropsychological makeup and more effective methods of treatment.

Very often many lazy p- Docs will give schizo diagnosis to autistic people , instead of taking the time to do a proper diagnosis . it is really quite a crime against Aspies. Have read this in several of the places, I have gone to research

take your time and explore, over time either it will make sense to you or it will be yet another false diagnosis. If you discover strengths and weaknesses that can be used to make your life better, that will be useful as life goes on. For me diagnosis completely changed my life and so many things finally made sense from my past. I have been able to do self accommodation to help struggles I had faced all my life. Glad you are with us. Welcome!

Thank you all for making me feel welcomed. I forgot to mention that I'm 30 years old, which seems like a somewhat older age to get an ASD diagnosis. But my pdoc reassured me that it's fairly common for this to happen. I've come to terms with my schizophrenia diagnosis (I was dx'd in 2017), but I'm not sure how I feel about the ASD dx yet. I know it's just a label, and I'm going to continue to live my life the same, but it's still a new thing for me. Some closure and confirmation.

Welcome Zeke1 and Autism is my Superpower to wrong planet. I hope your new diagnosis will help you. We have many people here with very late ASD diagnoses, some as late as thier 60s and 70s. I myself was diagnosed at age 55.

Yes I'd pursue a more rigorous diagnosis if I could get one easily. I can't see how it's possible to diagnose ASD that quickly, not with much certainty.
