So there is a bus stop “international district, expo New Mexico”. As I didn’t know the word expo, I couldn’t really hear what word it was. All I heard was

a) reference to the whole state rather than a city which sounded like it was something big

b) A really happy voice announcing it which also made it sound that way

It took me a month of trials and errors on google to finally figure out that the word is expo and it refers to cultural fair. I just figured it out 5 minutes ago.

But now the new question. What is the linguistic origin of the word expo? Is it some sort of abbreviation or what?

As a mathematician, I know the word exponential. The fact that expo sounds like a derivative of its root, is it just a coincidence or no?

Expo frequently means exposition. In this case, it looks like it's a fairgrounds type place, so exposition (in the sense of the exhibit of goods & technology) makes sense. The World's Fairs were expos.

Googling the origins of exposition & exponent shows they are not related.

You might see this reference as interesting. It seems that expositions derives from "exhibits" as nations demonstrated their industrial achievements.

Thank y'all for answering my question. I got off that stop yesterday and in fact found the expo sign. I didn't have time to go in though, as I have a meeting with my thesis advisor tomorrow. But perhaps I will go tomorrow after the meeting or something like that.
