Yes, it's developmental, but if a person googles "Autism" it will tell them that.

Again we don't say Down Syndrome Developmental Disorder, although babies are born with it.

DSM-5 now calls "Intellectual Disorders" as "Intellectual Developmental Disorders" and that is a bit unnecessary, because most people know that Intellectual Disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders.

Some people view their autism as more of a “difference,” so that’s why I don’t love the words “disorder” or “disability” even though those words could feel right (and be right) for some people.

We are somewhat getting into semantics here. They could use “syndrome” or something like that. (I can’t think of much because I have a raging cold)

I think it should stay as it is. Autism is a spectrum. We're all very unique. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

My understanding is that the word "disorder" means it's a difference which affects your life on an ongoing basis.

In our diagnostic criteria the symptoms have to be persistent and problematic enough to affect us on an ongoing basis, otherwise we wouldn't need support and we wouldn't be diagnosed or be eligible for services.

A syndrome means the person has a cluster of related symptoms (e.g., Downs Syndrome, Aspergers Syndrome).

Sure, we do have a syndrome but the word disorder helps us to qualify for more assistance by virtue of the definition.

I think it should just be called Autism. Each Autist can understand the details of how it works individually for him or her.
