I’m probably Aspie, but I’m a good athlete.

My Mom made me take tap at age 4 and 5, and I’m thinking it probably took as far as balance.

When I was age 14 in junior high, a friend and I could walk this thin ledge around the front of our school. It was about 4 feet off the ground. Parts were easy where you could hold onto a tree branch. Other parts were hard, for example, having to use just your fingertips to hold onto the metal around a window.

My friend was a serious gymnast [too tall to really make it big]. And I could keep up with him.

I'm not sure what your post is about so I'm guessing you're saying it's possible to be a good athlete and have autism.

Here is a list of famous athletes with autism.

Diagnosed with Autism

Jessica-Jane Applegate – Swimmer
Michael Brannigan – Track & Field Athlete
David Campion – Snowboarder
Breanna Clark – Paralympic Athlete
Ulysse Delsaux – Racecar Driver
Tommy Dis Brisay – Runner, Kayaker & Cross-Country Skiier
Jim Eisenreich – Major League Baseball Player
Todd Hodgetts – Paralympic Athlete
John Howard – Fighter
Anthony Ianni – Basketball Player
Lisa Llorens – Paralympic Athlete
Clay Marzo – Surfer
Frankie MacDonald – Meteorologist
Jason McElwain – Basketball Player
Chris Morgan – Olypmic rower
Max Park – Speed Cuber
Cody Ware – Racecar Driver
Armani Williams – Racecar Driver (the first NASCAR driver openly diagnosed on the autism spectrum)
Samuel Von Einem – Table Tennis Star

Reported/Rumored to Have Autism

Alex Buesnel – Gymnast (source: Wikipedia)
Lionel Messi – Soccer Player (source: Autism Community Network)

Although only rumoured to have autism, Lionel Messi has won a record seven Ballon d'Or awards , a record six European Golden Shoes and is arguably one of the best soccer players in the world.

I wasn't dx'd with aspergers (I am autistic though, not sure if that matters) but I'm not a bad with athletic stuff. I've always been pretty coordinated and would do fine in sports when I had to play them. That's never been an issue for me. I just lack that competitive drive though, so I didn't pursue group sports when I was younger. I wasn't into all that. I got into martial arts for a while as an adult, and I enjoyed it. I still run, hike and do things like randomly learn how to ride a unicycle because it seemed like fun  If I had the extra cash, I'd take up boxing. I think that sounds like a good time. I dig physical activity and so long as my body cooperates, I'm all about it.

I was a pretty good athlete as a kid but like many aspies I had trouble following multi-step instructions, which made following a coach's directions more difficult. So playing pickup basketball or soccer I'll be fine but once instructions got in the way I was in trouble.

Not an athlete, but I'm fit and not naturally clumsy like most of those diagnosed with autism does.

I would've able to benefit from something like sports and dancing that at an earlier age but...

Ignorant parents -- not coaxing me the right way to.
If not ignorant, helpless. Cannot afford, cannot have the time and place...

I’m going to still say in the middle.

And/or

We should help people play to strength and add skills that help people work around deficiencies. More so than being focused on diagnostic labels.

But,

A person might need a diagnosis of autism spectrum to tap into extra educational resources.

No, Messi isn’t autistic. There is zero indication of that. Seems like it comes from Brazilian gossip rags about ten years ago, but it is at odds with everything we know about the man.

And “arguably” one of the best in the world? There’s no arguably about it. At this point the only real discussion is whether he is the best of all time or if it is Pele.

Don't burst my Messi autistic bubble  (Even my 'Specialist Practitioner, Autism Spectrum Disorder.' told me about this but more to dispel ASD myths about sport)

Pele v Messi :?: So many variables , couldn't choose. As a Welshman I'm still hoping that Bale  will one day enter the best of all time chat.

My son isn't dx but he's very "Aspie" -- like off the charts. He's thinking about going for assessment but it costs so much he's deciding if it's worth it.

He's extremely talented in many sports and played them at an elite for years. He was often MVP or Captain. He has dozens of trophies and awards. In his case he's a very logical thinker and strategist. He practised repetitively and ruminates on how to improve every skill. It's like a special interest combined with OCD and very high intelligence. He's also into sports stats and he organises (and wins) a lot of fantasy leagues.

Some of the best athletes in the world are Autistic. Most of them are some of the best athletes in the world because they are Autistic. I am also a very good athlete and a lot of that is because I am Autistic. I am not the best in the world though.

As someone who attended college way back when, I’d say it’s almost 50-50 on whether a diagnosis enables you to tap into enough extra resources to be worth it. I’ve never been diagnosed, but as far as what I know about myself and the energy it requires me to conjure to deal with yet another bureaucracy and yet another set of steps.

At a more recent college I attended post-bac status, I was less than impressed with what I heard and saw about Disability Services.

And I wish more counseling was about play to strength, and not about obsessing over deficiency.

Running marathons and hiking in the mountains are the two activities that saved me from an unhealthy lifestyle and improved my coordination. I do have to be more careful than others might, however, and have had various falls plus battle scars to show for it.
