Same here. I remembered last minute that the show in question would start in just a few hours. :)

Stuff like going to the doctor and listening to the FDA isn't being a sheeple. It's just common sense.

Well, I guess I should tell my advisor to stop treating her stage 4 lymphoma with chemotherapy then. I guess she should also stop taking the medications that are stopping her liver (infiltrated by tumors) from failing. Who knows, yellow might be an attractive color for her.

Where are the studies you got this information from by the way? Or did you just make these numbers up?

I don't doubt that lifestyle changes and herbal supplements can be helpful in the case of chronic illnesses, or possibly even some acute illnesses, not to mention prevention, but homeopathy is not the be all and end all of health, just as medical science doesn't hold all the answers either. For holding such unyielding opinions on the efficacy of homeopathy while rejecting medical science as a whole and refusing to refute the objections of others with logic rather than rhetoric... jjstar, I name thee "sheeple."

Yes, I believe in routine vaccinations, and anyone who knows their history and has an ounce of sense will realize this is based on solid facts. Do you know what infant and child mortality rates were before routine immunizations?!? Staggering! We live in an age where we have few serious diseases to worry about, we have it very good. We're extremely fortunate.

And what is this "sheeple" stuff? Aside from categorizing and labeling and name-calling, that is.

Vaccine-derived polio spreads in Nigeria

8 October 2007
Source: SciDev.Net

Sixty-nine children in Nigeria have been partially paralysed after weakened viruses from polio vaccines were inadvertently transmitted to people in unvaccinated regions in the north of the country.

Festus Adu, director of the WHO's polio laboratory in Ibadan, Nigeria, told SciDev.Net that this polio outbreak is only appearing in areas where people are refusing to be vaccinated or where there is not enough oral polio vaccine.

"The best way to overcome the outbreak of vaccine-related polio virus is to increase immunisation coverage, making sure that all children get the vaccine," said Adu, whose lab analyses polio samples before sending them for further tests at the Centers for Disease Control in the United States.

Adu, who is also a member of the Nigerian government's polio eradication committee's expert review, said researchers were preparing vaccine alternatives to combat the outbreak.

Adu said monovalent vaccines (which protect against only one of the three strains) should be used in the areas where the virus is still circulating. But nationwide, the polyvalent vaccine (which protects against all three strains of poliovirus) should be aggressively used and coverage increased, he said.

Many Nigerians are blaming the outbreak on vaccination efforts, an attitude experts fear may ruin previous gains in eradicating polio in the country.

The ongoing outbreak in 18 northern states of Nigeria's 36 states started in 2006 that and was reported only last week in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Review, a journal published by the US Centers for Disease Control.

Nigeria has the largest number of polio cases, accounting for 61 per cent of global polio cases and 95 per cent of cases in Africa, according to the disease surveillance unit of the WHO.

A government immunisation coordinator working in northern Nigeria, who declined to be named, said a heightened immunisation campaign for children was a necessity to stop the epidemic from spreading.

A wide range of government health officials declined to answer SciDev.Net about whether immunisation was being stepped up, saying it was a political as well as a scientific issue and that they were waiting for a statement from minister of health Adenike Grange.

Most of the anti-immunisation campaigns have been in the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria, and a number of Muslim clerics have been quoted in the Nigerian media as claiming that vaccines are dangerous and cause sterility or illness.

http://www.scidev.net/content/news/eng/ ... igeria.cfm

And this was front page news in the NY Times, right?
Hurry, get your vaccines asap!

Do you read newspapers?

Do you hum commercial tunes?

Then I guess you just don't know that there are healthy alternatives to purchasing food in a supermarket/grocery but require a tad more effort and maybe even some humility - I'm thinking Freegans and farmer's markets at the end of the day. Being poor doesn't have to spell ignorance and bad health habits either for that matter. Just getting some basic information about coops, markets, farms could make all the diff between eating crap and eating the way the body needs.

I read newspapers to find out what goes on in the world I LIVE IN. Doesn't seem like a following action to me.

Because people with political and social agendas write for newspapers, giving you their perspective on *news* when in fact they do not tell you the entire story from all angles. They tell you what they want you to know and it's upon that reality that you yourself formulate an opinion. Newspapers write to sell copies, they entice you with what they think will make you buy their brand. They give you bonuses in the form of coupons and *helpful hints and recipies* so you'll be sure to be a repeat customer. Heck they even have *funnies* to keep you entertained while on the front pages tragedy and corruption unfold delicately.

Seriously - if you want to know what's really going on in the world from the people's perspective you get your info from numerous unbiased sources - on the web. Drudge comes to mind - but there are others. Personally I read about 10 diff sources and formulate some kind of opinion but only after study, verification and just plain discernment based on my own knowledge. I take no one's word for anything and it's not news till I've seen it with my own two eyes. I don't trust *sources* - I trust resources.

Pop music is POPULAR by definition. So if it's catchy, we like it.

Who's we? As in we the sheeple? LOL

Quote:
Commercial music by definition is any music that makes money. So only poor bands are good? Despite the fact that band that are good sell more records, and thus BECOME commercially successful, and POPULAR (see above). Unless you're referring to commercials in the sense of advertising.. in which case, OF COURSE we do. They're made for that in mind. Doesn't mean we're going to buy the product.

Popular by the industry's standards that sell you glitz, sex and adrenaline in a shiny jewel box or nifty i tuney download. It sells because there's a payoff for you. Popular music is designed to dumb you down and distract you with *beats*. The video just added another level of commercialism where they now shove fashion, trends, politics and immorality in your face so that on all fronts the consumer is hooked on a feeling and has *gotta buy that CD* to be cool, with it, down with it, being accepted and other emotional needs. On a purely musical level there's little there to feed the soul, unless of course you'll go for junk food. Because that's exactly what it is for the ears.

So if I have lung cancer, I can heal myself? If I need a heart transplant, I can mend/GROW my own? I should just cut someone else's out with my in-depth surgical knowledge that I definitely have? I had pneumonia in January of this year; would I have miraculously eliminated all of the gunk in my lungs if I simply believed in myself? Don't be an idiot.

Not all consumers of music buy it because it will make them "cool". Music is designed not to dumb us down, but to soothe us and make us feel emotions. I'd be lost without music. That doesn't make me a follower of the latest trend. And as for the junk food comment, each to their own.

Just because I read newspapers doesn't mean I believe every word said in them. "Funnies" are there to amuse ppl. They don't just buy a newspaper because of them. And you're obviously unaware that EVERY source of information ANYWHERE is biased towards the writers point of view. I think if you put your faith in conspiracy writers it is you who is part of the "sheeple", not us.

If I didn't get a shot for TB or meningitis who knows what would've happened. I'd rather be safe than sorry on that one.

And as healthy alternatives over here in England are most DEFINITELY of a higher price than junk food (which I like the taste of anyway, I don't just buy it to be part of the crowd), I simply cannot afford things such as soy milk, asparagus, or whatever is the new "alternative health" food this month. That, to me, is following the crowd and the advice of others. I'm perfectly healthy and I eat crap. I don't feel in the least bit more ill than when I tried this stupid health food diet. In fact, it made me lose weight and as I'm barely 100lb as it is, that isn't a good thing.

I think you are misunderstanding the definition of "sheeple".

Quote:
Sheeple is a term of disparagement, a portmanteau created by combining the words "sheep" and "people"; a reference to herd mentality. It is often used to denote persons who acquiesce to authority, and thus undermine their own human individuality. The implication of sheeple is that as a collective, people believe whatever they are told, especially if told so by authority figures, without processing it to be sure that it is an accurate representation of the real world around them. The term is generally used in a political or religious sense.

The label seems to have originated among conspiracy theorists in the United States of a far right political persuasion. The Wall Street Journal first reported the label in print in 1984, where its reporter encountered the word used by the proprietor of an American Opinion bookstore affiliated with the John Birch Society.[1] In this usage, taxpayers were derided for their perceived blind conformity, as opposed to the conspiracy theorists and tax protesters who thought independently. "Sheeple" are people who pay their taxes and accept what the government and the mass media tell them.

Most of the things you put on that "you're a "sheeple" if" list does not explain what you mean by the term. If you had put maybe "if you believe everything they tell you in newspapers" or "if you believe everything a doctor tells you", or even "if you buy popular music because you think you should" maybe you'd be right. But you didn't. You made innocuous comments about ppl, but it went a little awry didn't it?

Now.. do you REALLY BELIEVE in the term first recorded in print in the Wall Street Journal? Uh. Oh.[/quote]

jjstar, did it never occur to you that some people buy things that are bad for them because they LIKE them? Maybe we dont fancy f*****g about all day looking for the one health-food shop in the area when we could just buy some crap that tastes nice?

Of course everyone who runs a conspiracy website is completely unbiased, obviously.....

NO WAY that a multi-million pound international news agency could be aware of whats going on in the world. Nah, its got to be the guy with the tinfoil hat living in his basement. People who run "independent" news sites NEVER have social or political agendas? You only believe what youve seen with your own two eyes? So you dont believe in moose? Or kodiak bears? Or (insert random wildlife not indigenous to your area). ? And since when have a few comic strips of mild amusing content EVER been introduced to numb you to a global catastrophe? Garfield and Dilbert only exist so you dont notice the government is f*****g you over again?

I assume that you are capable of resetting all the bones in your own body without help? You know how to trepan yourself? Know how to replace your own kidneys do you? Capable of adminstering resuscitation to yourself, then know how to apply a drain, after you get hit by a car and your rib goes through your lungs? please, do reveal your encyclopaedic knowledge of medicine that so outweighs 7 years plus of medical training...

I would be interested to know what "good" music is exactly, by your standards. Mournful dirges about the fate of mother earth? Low quality ska-punk tracks about how fascist the police are? Banging hardhouse anthems about how drugs are really good for you? Maybe, just maybe, not everyone wants to be buried under a deluge of social reality all the time. Would I be right in thinking that your own music collection is made up entirely of garage bands recorded on a borrowed 8 -track, most of whom have sunk without trace?

Take the tinfoil hat off.. the reverse-vampires, working in conjuction with the fourth reich and the saucer-people under the giuse of zionism ARE NOT watching you.

Just spend 6 hours at a sink hocking loogies while you're mortally sick. That would be so much easier than going to a doctor.

I am an intercollegiate basketball player and no one on my team would be able to compete with the speed that we do if we didn't eat healthy food. When we go to the pub to get some food we usually pick healthy choices like bacon cheeseburgers without vegetables or pizza while most other people are getting unhealthy things like vegan organic caesar salad wraps. Earlier today I went to Arby's and got some of their new fried cheesecake bites because they are so healthy. If I ate unhealthy things like vegetable matter grown in nightshade it would slow me down. If you give the clerk at the farmer's market a blowjob you would be surprised how cheaply you can get fresh fruit.

If it isn't pop I would imagine that it would be something unpopular, like rap.

If you answered YES to more than 9 of these questions - you are a sheeple. Baaah Baaah black sheep, have you been fooled? Yessir, yessir a whole lifetime through.

You seem to be using at least three distinct and incompatible definitions of sheeple (and, my, what a despicable word choice): reasonable, pragmatic; moronic; and matter of taste. While we all bemoan that the Food and Drug Administration is beholden to pharmaceutical industry and partisan interests, the reality is that they still manage to do some good by imposing regulations on an industry where mistakes cost lives even if they do not execute this duty perfectly. Similarly, medical doctors have years of education in their profession and a personal investment in their performance. True, some doctors are apathetic or lazy; some are unethical; some partied too much in med school; but most have a much better idea about medicine than the average person. Now, you can always get all Jehovah's Witness and forswear all medical treatment and advice; but I bet after a terrible car accident or after developing a major illness, you're going to rethink your position. Same with innoculations, antibiotics, antiseptics, and the like. You can go back to the 18th century if you want; of course, your chances of dying of what is now a totally preventable or treatable disease would be much greater.

Since apparently you reject democracy, what political system do you support: theocracy, feudalism, tribalism, anarchism, monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, tyranny, fascism, Marxist-Leninist-style communism, something else? I take it you understand your denouncement of democracy implies you believe there is a better alternative. As for newslpapers, I agree with you that most of them are complete crap, and that isn't even factoring in any personal, editorial, corporate, or systemic biases (which mostly affect what is considered newsworthy in the more reputable newspapers rather than the objectivity of the coverage itself). Unfortunately, the blogosphere and sites like the Drudge Report tend to be even more biased and myopic. Why? Newspapers had to sell to a fairly diverse audience to stay afloat. The cost of operating a personal blog or website like the Drudge Report is low enough that anyone with enough time and determination can quite easily get something going. Not only that, but they can link into the blogs of like-minded people and never hear other perspectives. In the not-so-distant past, it would be difficult for someone with highly unusual opinions to find many of like mind, so they would have to consciously battle the majority view(s) and perhaps in the process develop a more sound worldview (or just close themselves off in solipsism).

As for drinking the proverbial Kool-Aid, what do you have against the Kool-Aid Man anyway? All he wants to do is hang around young children and randomly appear, shouting "Oh yeah!" in his deepest, most seductive voice. What's the harm there?

You seem to have turned a healthy skepticism of received wisdom and authority into an automatic, compulsive hatred for anything smacking of agreement with authority or convention. In other words, you must be a teenager. Your ability to fit in without a drop of individuality amongst the gothkin, anti-government Digg.com "Wake up!" ret*ds, and other groups founded on this compulsion is laudable.

Just spend 6 hours at a sink hocking loogies while you're mortally sick. That would be so much easier than going to a doctor.

Not all consumers of music buy it because it will make them "cool". Music is designed not to dumb us down, but to soothe us and make us feel emotions. I'd be lost without music. That doesn't make me a follower of the latest trend. And as for the junk food comment, each to their own.

Don't you know that Britney Spears has singlehandedly destroyed most European cultures? And that if you don't eat enough couscous we won't produce enough crap to grow healthy food?

Macbeth wrote:
Just because I read newspapers doesn't mean I believe every word said in them. "Funnies" are there to amuse ppl. They don't just buy a newspaper because of them. And you're obviously unaware that EVERY source of information ANYWHERE is biased towards the writers point of view. I think if you put your faith in conspiracy writers it is you who is part of the "sheeple", not us.

Don't you know that the government has placed a mind controlling poison in newspaper ink that takes effect when your skin comes into contact with it?

This one isn't funny. I've known people that have died of meningitis.

Uh. Oh.

Once again you are wrong, Macbeth. He just made a typo when he wanted to call us steeples. 8)

jjstar, did it never occur to you that some people buy things that are bad for them because they LIKE them? Maybe we dont fancy f***ing about all day looking for the one health-food shop in the area when we could just buy some crap that tastes nice?

I have already made it clear in my previous posts on this thread that I completely disagree with that statement.

Garfield and Dilbert only exist so you dont notice the government is f***ing you over again?

Jim Davis and Scott Adams are reincarnations of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, how could you not know that?

Rolling around in freshly fertilized grass cures everything, it's the ultimate herbal remedy. The fertilizer helps to sanitize your wounds because only all natural things can do that, while the grass does the rest.

Just a head's up to all those who replied at length - if you have a specific question or can narrow it down to a shorter version I can reply - otherwise - just know i skim through and that's about it.

Also - I don't reply to those fishing for some kind of reaction by posting personal ad hominem BS. Never did and never will. Like my grandpappy used to say - say it nicely or go waste someone else's time and energy.

I loved my grandpappy.
