My mom has said that due to AS, I shouldn't:

drop out of school,

get bad marks in school,

dress the way I want,

or drink milk (but she always made sure I ahd milk and just said "They say people with AS shouldn't drink milk at all".

lol - other than the milk drinking, all mothers say that to their kids

but take advise on dressing. My #1 son tells #2 son (who has strong traits but doesn't know it) if his clothes look good or if something looks too daggy to put something else on. Sort of like a fashion cop.

(PS - don't know what daggy is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dags_%28subculture%29 )

The connection between AS and milk is casein. A lot of people think people with ASDs shouldn't have it.

I got bad grades because of AS, so I don't know why your mom would say that.
And the milk thing . . . wtf?

Your mum's got this one backwards; AS is the perfect "excuse" to wear whatever the hell you want; hell, you should go get a note from your doc that says, "I' have AS; dress codes do not apply to me". Tell your mum I said so. (Really, please do; your mum knows who "Icarus" is by now, right? :P )

Remember when I agreed to be username88's best man at your wedding provided that I didn't have to dress up? Just like that...

In all seriousness, folks on the autism spectrum often have strange sensory issues that affect the kind of clothes they can or can't tolerate wearing. Generally speaking, I only ever wear jeans and a t-shirt - everywhere, no matter what I do. Part of this is that I feel very comfortable in loose cotton clothing; I don't notice them. If I have to wear, say, dress pants, or heaven forbid a tie, it will grate on my nerves constantly until I become irritable, and ultimately very tetchy. I'm entirely unable to wear any jewelry, even a watch (which is a nice excuse to carry a pocket watch).

I've been meaning to make a t-shirt similar to one I saw a long time ago; it had a picture of a punk rocker flicking you off, and the shirt said, "f**k you! I'm from Florida." I want to make up a similar shirt that says, "f**k you! I have Asperger's Syndrome." I'm sure that'll garner good marks with "the movement". 8) I might make a similar one re: autism for my 10-year old son. 8O My naughtiness knows no bounds...

Good fortune,

- Icarus is wearing his old Fight Club t-shirt at work right now...

AS wasn't a known diagnosis when I was growing up, but my parents wouldn't have accepted it as an excuse for doing anything less than my best, and for that I'm glad.

teach

I may not be the best teachers but i've seen ones who are far worse than I'd ever be - and by that I mean ones who literally sit there and read a book while the kids run about and do whatever

Why shouldn't they have it? What is the reason? I drink milk often. I haven't noticed any bad side effects lol.

So suddenly, it's okay to drop out of school and get bad marks in school if you're an NT. Is that right, or maybe you shouldn't single out just Aspies?

Why not?

Milk is a good source of calcium. I can't see why people with AS can't drink it.

A psychologist once said that I should be institutionalized...kept in hospital for the rest of my life.
