Only about 18% of Americans have blue eyes.

So it will be interesting how the statistics in this thread turn out!

I'm surprised it is so high, etc... It seems like most I have seen that don't have brown eyes have green. I'm going to have to look more. As for the deal in this thread, it seems that autism is more common among caucasions, and it would certainly be more obvious in most cases as most other cultures have ways aroung the social component. Anyway, most of the people that have brown eyes are not caucasion.

Even if blue eyes are not so very common, every time I read a fairy tale in childhood, I came across those descriptions of beautiful charming princesses with golden locks, snow-white carnation and, of course, BLUE eyes. My conviction that blue is so terribly trivial color for eyes derives from those stories, I guess, and from all those films with sexbombs like Marylin Monroe or Pamela Anderson who all have blue eyes and blond hair.

Thanks for explaining an issue of hazel eyes - for all those eyars I was sure that hazel eyes it's simply eyes that are light brown - you know, like hazel nuts and it's why they're called this way.

I never know what to call my eye color so I put other in this survey. My eyes are blue with yellow spokes (someone upthread used that word and I think that's the word I was loooking for). So I usually say they're blue or blue-green but they're really not properly either. I think of hazel as a mixture of browns and greens so I don't say that because there is no brown at all in mine.

People must think it strange that when I'm filling out a form and have to pause and think what I'll say when they ask for eye color - but it looks like a lot of people here have the same thing... If there's any theme I'm seeing it's that a lot of us have multiple colors in our eyes. Most of the general population seem to have a fairly solid color, whether blue or brown (green I think I agree is pretty rare).

(my eye pick is on page 3 - it's a little small to see much though).

Yeah, it's a shame. Some speak of a blond moment, etc... which is slang for DUMB! Yet I haven't seen ANY correlation between real hair color, and intelligence. I have known some smart blonds, and DUMB people with black hair. And as for eye color, that site having the document regarding how common blue eyes were is correct. Things that might be related to exposure to light might be more prevalent, but otherwise, no difference. but HEY, who can say nicky's eyes don't look nice?

BTW for the record, I have dark hair, and my eyes, outside of describing them as I have above, are about half grey and green. And I have seen a LOT of colors called hazel. Even MY eye color, though it certainly isn't brown.

I put hazel, because thats what I get told. My eyes are a mix of green and brown, not so much one colour, but the two are very bold. Further inspection with my shaving mirror and some hard staring shows a ring of brown around the pupil, the rest being regular eye green. Because my hair is black, my brow makes my eyes look a lot darker, that and my celtic brow is quite pronounced.

Its funny, if you edit a picture enough, you can look nothing like yourself. My eyes are not normally this wide and the missing eyebrows take away a lot.

WOW, that could describe my eyes, though the color on mine is grey instead of brown. Interestingly, the last eye doctor to mention my coloring said the grey color was caused by brown pigment! Go figure!

My theory. We can assume this stereotype has its origin in this simple fact that it's statistically rare to be characterized by a bigger amount of positive qualities (wealth, beauty, intelligence, interesting personality, good heart, good wealth, physical strengh) - the more rare the more such qualities a person has. There's something in humans what makes them striving for harmony and a harmony can exist only when any side doesn't prevail over another one. An average human being's destiny is mediocrity, good and bad features shouldn't disturb the equilibrium of each other. There's much more bad or at least average elements creating a human while those which distinguish a man to the advantage are generally found more rarely. A balance should be kept and it's why it's considered ( subconsciously) more or less unhealthy, indescent and unnatural to be beautiful and intelligent in the same time (intelligence and beauty belong to the most important among qualities mentioned by me; beauty - somebody handsome has bigger chance to find a sexual partner and to give his/her genes to next generations; intelligence - it's logical why so there's no need to explain this). It's too much for one person to have them both and people (subconsciously, we must not forget) assume that having one such an important quality (in this case it's beauty which for centuries was associated with having fair hair and blue eyes) you simply can't (or shouldn't I should rather say) have another equally important feature (intelligence) in the same time. As same as highly intelligent people are stereotypically presented as those who are smart and having a big knowledge but let's be sincere - not very atractive (like Karl, Johny Bravo's friend who's an embodiment of stereotypical frail nerd or Mary Bennett in Jane Austin - reading a lot and increasing her knowledge but also unatractive young girl).

The interesting thing, irulan, is that that basically indicates that everyone should be equal. That as beauty decreases, intelligence increases, and vice/versa. That certainly doesn't happen. In fact, left to their own, the dumbest would probably become pretty ugly. Meanwhile, the smartest may not get much prettier, but could get smarter, and likely no uglier.

I realize that you realize that, but I was just musing.

Btw, speaking of eyes, I've just recalled something - I don't know if such an expresion exists in English but in my country brown eyes have also another special name - beer eyes because they have the same color what that beverage

I have green eyes, although until I was a teenager, they were blue. It actually says "blue" on my driver's license, because when I was 17 I still wasn't sure what color my eyes were- they were still in the process of changing. They are definitely green now, although my right eye is slighter bluer than my left.

This is a close-up of my left eye, which I consider my interesting eye because of the patch of brown:

Another theory on the supposed prevalence of blue eyes is that most of the fairy tales we know of were written by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.

Or so the Germans would have us believe...
