Ok...well today I spent a total of just over 4 hours in a crowded shopping mall with someone. Half of that time was spent in a movie theatre, which was better than being in the actual mall.
The remaining half of the time was spent walking into different stores and "browsing" at things.

I have noticed, that after a fair amount of time in a mall, I get a feeling that I can only describe as "nausea inside my head". It's almost like continuous motion sickness, but not in my stomach. Everything feels like it's spinning, I get light-headed and my body goes off balance [I fell over after stepping out of an elevator today] :?
It got to the point today that I was asked 9 times in 1 hour if I were ok.

I was wondering if this happens to anyone else and if there is any way to avoid it? Would taking motion sickness pills before a mall trip be helpful, or just a waste of time?
I was at the mall with a potential friend today and really don't want her to think differently of me because of this...thats why I am asking for suggestions/solutions to this issue.

thanks.

I've felt that before but only like once in my life, I think... I'm pretty sure I know what you mean by nausea inside your head!

Tell us about your new potential friend!

She is my grandmothers, work collegues, niece. She is from Surbia and has been in NZ for three years. Oh yea, her name is Katarina and she is 6 months younger than me...turning 16 tomorrow.
Umm...she likes to play sport and her favourite one is soccer. She also likes computers and technology in general. Plays Age of Empires and WoW.
Over all, she seems nice so far.

Try an experiment. Next time you go to the mall wear a pair of sunglasses with a yellow tint, if that doesn't cure your nausea then try a pair with a blue tint. There's a possibility that this could be caused by the lights. The glasses don't need to be too dark, just enough to attenuate the light a little.

I have epilepsy that gives me a feeling of nausea in different parts of my body. It's often triggered by stress. I think this is something you should mention to your doctor ...

I had to have an EEG done two years ago for something and I was tested also for epilepsy which came back negative. All though, yes, I still will mention it to my doctor.

Absolutely Brittany. I get this nausea feeling in my head - and somewhere else in my body but not my stomach...I don;t know how to ascertain where it is (proprioception issues?)

It;s horrid and I've had it all my life. It can take a day or two to recover from. I don;t know how to solve it. I just avoid those environments where it's most likely to occur. (like malls and crowdedplaces) It's also impossible to describeto others if they haven't had the experience.

I get that. It feels like the overloadingness of the shopping centre has scrambled things in my brain.

It could be the lighting, does it look like there is a very very fast strobe light going on so fast its almost unoticable which seems to make it worse more so if the light is very bright?

I get weird somato-sensory episodes occasionally, especially when I stretch or when I've been looking at a computer or TV screen for a while, it only lasts around 10 to 20 seconds, though. I get a somewhat pleasurable tingly sensation coming from the top of my head that travels down my body, things get a bright orange tint similar to that caused very bright incandescent lights, and my muscles go weak.

I get this all the time, especially in crowded places. I think its a sensory over load thing, too much going on around me.

Yes...sort of.
It seems like the lights are flickering, which in a way they actually are anyway [lots of them being turned on and off at the same time]

I get this when I'm feeling totally overloaded. Usually I get it when I'm feeling extremely stressed. It feels like my head should pop open and spew all over the place. Instead I end up feeling like I am going to pass out.

Were you stressed out about hanging out with her? It sounds to me like it could be stress-related.

No, I wasn't stressed about hanging out with her. I agree though, could be stress related as I was stressed but just not about that.
We had to take a bus to and from the mall...which i really HATE public transportation.
