Unfortunately whatever we do can be to excess, and we often medicate or drink to try and find our place in the world..

I have written an article: Do not drug us - understand us:
http://asplanet.info/index.php?option=c ... Itemid=105
Hope this helps a little, but drugs/alcohol really is the not answer just compounds any problems you already have, been there done that - you really need to find and believe in yourself.

A bit of experimenting, yes. I haven't found anything to be particularly effective though, other than a little alcohol in social situations.
My latest has been with ADD medication (yes, perscribed to me), it's somewhat helpful. Mostly because it keeps me from getting agrivated by my AS so easily. I don't know if I'll keep with it though.

What have your findings been?

I've taken everything apart from smack and crack and eventually found that exercise and vitamins made me happier. I now take pride in my boring lifestyle.

Still knocking back the drinks, but I've developed a strategy of not starting on them until ten or eleven, or even midnight, thus cutting down my window of opportunity for falling over.

Zghost, I read that you are taking ADD meds for your AS. Did your psychaitrist prescribe them, and what are you taking? I have experimented with adderall (illegally) and had desirable results but, I'm afraid to ask for it. Having an extensive past-history of drug/alcohol abuse, I don't think my psych will prescribe any narcotics. Reading your response gives me the courage to ask. Thanks, Jason.

Like I said, I have used drugs/alcohol to self-medicate, from an early age. I started drinking at age 12, pot at age 16, pain pills at age 22, and heroin/oxycontin at age 25, until age 30, when I was jailed and court ordered to go to rehab. This rehab had a dual-diagnosis unit for people with both drug and mental problems, where I was placed on some effective anti-anxiety meds. I have remained clean for a little over 3 years but I don't think I could have done it without daily opiate treatment. I am prescribed Suboxone (buprenorphine) which suppresses the opiate cravings very well. It also help control my anxiety. If you have opiate cravings/addiction, I recommend Suboxone highly. Remember, If you want something bad enough, you have to go for it. Trust me, nothing worth having comes easily. Best of luck, Jason.

Not exactly, I'm taking them for my ADD that I also have. First she gave me Focalin, which didn't do much. Now it's a new one, Vyvanse (30mg, the lowest dose), which is pretty effective. It's similar to Adderal, but not "abusable", it has to be digested to be activated. If you snort it or shoot it, it does nothing.
Of course since I do have ADD, they do NOT make me hyper, just less irriatable and more patient.

Thanks, They help me to concentrate better. I think they make me more able to keep up with my racing thoughts. Jason/jawbrodt.

I think that we tend to have addictive personalities because we so easily get obsessed with stuff.

I know I self med with caffeine. Just Coke. Fairly harmless. I know that I can't function without it.

You know, I had to read that a couple of times to get it.... I did the same, the Coke in the red cans, then had to quit because of diabetes, but I think I'm going to start telling people, "Oh yeah man... I did TONS of coke back then...".

   since I work in a bank that kind of stuff always gets GREAT reactions...

I still need my caffeine fix, and agree what ever we eat, drink or do we can become obsessed / addicted too. Thats why there needs to be special help for us, as places like AA just do not work.

I've been drugged before...but I guess that doesn't really count. I've never self medicated.

Everything bar heroine. They don't help just make socialising slightly more bearable, but they seriously mess up your brain chemistry and make things much worse in the long run. I still drink occasionally but I always seem to have worse hangovers than anyone else I'm with.

I take Concerta ( a time-release form of Ritalin) and Paxil, both work wonders. The Concerta helps me to keep on task at work and college instead of daydreaming constantly and the Paxil helps my OCD and anxiety issues.

Hate drugs, don't smoke, don't drink, never touched a drug in the illegal sense, tried couple of drugs but unless they got a drug for a fear of not belonging. I was at 250mgs of a drug & 325mgs was the max... before I started to think this is just stupid..

Logic I go on is, drugs don't help you it just replace's it with another problem.
