temporary drugs for manic phases / insomnia

I appear to be having a mild manic phase with insomnia. i use Tamazipan (this week) to sleep about 6 hours a night. I want advice about a drug for occasional use, because I want to avoid long-term medication. I have an appointment with a psychiatrist next week. I have no dx yet but I think im a mild aspie with occasional mood disorder (stress-driven bipolar). I am 50 and have self-managed all my life, so I dont need this shrink to assume control over my life now ! !! !! 95 % of my life I sleep ok.

try melatonin, magnesium, 5htp, and a mixed herbal remedied from a health food store.

I find 10 mg zolpidem (Ambien in the States) helps me sleep with only marginal side-effects (dry mouth, bad taste in mouth) when I am finding sleep difficult.

Exercise like jogging or strenuous walking is a more healthy alternative.

Tylenol Simply Sleep is just a low dose of benedryl, it's non-habit forming.

zoplicaine works well. non addictive and can be used infrequently as required.
you can become refractory to it fairly quick....( immune)
but i had insomnia and it worked well.

A psych would most likely prescribe Risperdal or Seroquel.

SSRIs like Zoloft are also often helpful with mild bipolar disorder and other mood disorders. I have a speculative AS dx and cyclic mood disorder from psych. Zoloft works very well for me- helps with the insomnia, keeps me more even, helps with anxiety too and has taken me down a notch in how I react to sensory stimuli too- mellowed me out a bit.
