I hate the term 'ASPIE'

It makes me feel like a freak

Does anyone else hate the word, and if so.. why?

Maybe this is a reflection on the way you feel about yourself?

We just had a lunch on the weekend with some WP members getting together.

There were 4 - 5 diagnosed Aspies (lost count) and there appeared to be a lot of Aspie Pride!

I am trying to educate my 2 sons who have Asperger's that being Aspie is something to be proud of.

Helen

Well, I have accepted my diagnosis now and feel ok about it.. so it's not the way I feel about myself... I've been wondering if it's the word itself, the way it's said or the sound of the word or something...

I really don't know...

I'm indifferent, but I have to ask:

Is there a term that you prefer to "aspie"? (It can be one that's already in use or one of your own creation.)

I'm just curious. I don't especially like "aspie", but "person with Asperger's Syndrome" doesn't sound any better to me and it takes longer to say.

I don't have a problem with it at all; as personaly I don't like the name 'Asperger', as it is naming a group of people after the German scientist that first done studies on them, as if we are something to be claimed. But although 'Aspie' is derived from 'Aspergers', it at least sounds better in my opinion.

The only problem with it is a danger of segrigating people by putting labels on them. But I don't think this matters much; for example, I only refer to my brother, friends and other NTs as 'NT' if the convosation has something to do with Aspergers/Nerotypicalism. But otherwise I never think of them as 'NT', just as my brother doesn't call me 'an Aspie' unless we're talking about Aspergers/Nerotypicalism.

Plus there's a certain amount of comradeship in calling oneself an Aspie.

It does sound like Ass Pie. Which is funny. I've never tried an ass pie myself. Someone should let me know how they taste. :D

I think I have figured out why I hate it so much.
It's because I don't like the way the sound rolls off the tongue...

I actually prefer the term 'Asperger Syndrome' or I like it when people say 'your AS traits.' It's nicer. ^^

"Aspie" is a little too cutesy for me, but I don't mind it, and I use it.

Yeah, just something about how it sounds. I prefer AS myself.

The term 'aspie' could sound a bit belittling, but there's no better word or term that's under three syllables. I like the abbreviation 'AS' as a shortened form of Asperger's Syndrome (if only to avoid the inevitable burger jokes) but 'person with AS' sounds too formal and clinical.

I dislike the word Autistic because it's tainted by society (ie: movie characters). Aspie is a "cute" word for a condition that is still, as yet, not widely and popularly known. It's also not likely, at this stage, to be misinterpreted.

As a result. I'm pretty happy with it.

Hmmm...'Aspie' sounds as though it's infantilising the condition somehow. I'll admit, this pushes my personal anger buttons - if someone calls me 'babyish', or something similar, I have to restrain myself from hitting them.

I don't understand people's need to give pet names to everything around them.

I used to really dislike the word. People with AS were proudly labelling themselves with it ("Hey, look at me, I've got a disorder") and it got on my nerves. But I got over it.
Now I don't mind if people use the word, and I use the word occasionally to describe people with AS, but I never use the word to describe myself.
