I'm not emo, but I keep hearing the phrase "emo music." Out of curiosity, can somebody tell me what in the hell qualifies as emo music?

This is what it was originally supposed to be:

but there wasn't even agreement on that:

Then it turned into this kind of thing:

Then it became trendy, and then the name started to be applied to many different kinds of music. These days it seems to be synonymous with bland, whiny pop music.

BTW, I'm not emo myself, but I can appreciate a small amount of it and I like answering questions about music.

By Intarwebz definition:

Linkin Park.

Pretty much just that.
If you want to get broader: pretty much any melodramatic "woe is me" music.
Mainly because emos are just a bunch of whiny little b*****s.

Remember: It is down the road, not across the street.

I don't think Linkin Park qualifies, being angry rather than sad.

That last one had an interesting video, though I couldn't stand the song, it was so whiny. That, and the singer seemed half-dead from depression.

The didn't mind the first video so much.

What I don't get is what emos are even sad about. As far as I'm aware, most of them are rich kids. Maybe they don't like their family lives or something. I really don't know.

I met one emo and he isn't "a whiny b***h". HE might be gay though....

So anger isn't an emotion?
They're practically the same thing with varying levels of noise anyway.

They don't have any good reason.
They're just hyped up on hormones.
Half of them aren't even all that upset; they're just doing it to fit in with the kids who are.
Pathetic. ¬_¬

Fail.

Your music taste needs upgrading. At LEAST upgrade to Slayer level.

The definition changes constantly, so I am not at liberty to say if I like it or not.
