It interests me how taboo some topics are and how people attempt to silence these sorts of discussions.

I've noticed a couple of taboo subjects come up here.

One is parents speaking negatively of being a parent.

Another was a woman complaining about the problems of being good-looking.

Can anybody think of any other taboo subjects - and I don't mean the obvious ones about sex or whatever, I'm more interested in the subtle ones.

Not liking children.

I don't hate kids -- I just have no interest in them whatsoever.

If I tell anyone that I don't want to have kids because I just don't like them, they look at me like I eat babies for dinner or something. :? The reaction really is that extreme. :!:

How about feeling superior? That's supposed to be taboo because we are all supposed to be the same no one is supposed to be better than anyone else. However, I don't think someone is superior for the most obvious reasons, the ones others have.
I value what isn't the norm: self reflection, thinking, eccentricity, meditation.

Being liberal or progressive on a topic; save for PPR.

Being positive.

I've seen a lot of arguments about religion, drugs, prostitution/exotic dancing, and self-mutilation/suicide.

An interesting one that urban dictionary brought up was other cultures eating dogs/cats

Mental illnesses such as bipolar, schizophrenia. Paranoia, delusional thinking. Suicide is probably another. I was reading the posts of 'someone' who kept telling a forum how terrible she felt, I noticed others shared how they were feeling, but I noticed no-one reached to help this person. It may have been done in PM.
Suicidial thoughts are taboo subject - people need to be able to express their feelings and seek help, advice, support or direction.

One reason suicidal thoughts are taboo is because you can be locked up against your will for having them (even if you're unlikely to act on them). That makes people afraid to talk about them in public.

I think also, yes, being what psychiatry would call 'psychotic' or 'ret*d' is also.. not sure if taboo exactly, but certainly looked down on by a lot of people in this community who probably also think that nobody with those labels is reading.

And also, anything else that will upset the Autism Purity Police.

It seems to be to do with the protection of certain Important Social Myths (isms?).

The myth that
parenting and having kids is wonderful
being good looking is wonderful,
living is wonderful

not sure what to say about the ooo000's How about feeling superior? That's supposed to be taboo because we are all supposed to be the same no one is supposed to be better than anyone else.

I think thats the same myth field as being good looking, only in reverse, is it the myth that

everyone is equal?

I think this is how you find out what values we hold to be faux true?

...or maybe I'm just rambling.

How the federal reserve is raping the American, and a large part of the global, economy and is mostly responsible for the current recession soon to be depression. Whenever I want to say something about it they look at me as if I am some crazy conspiracy-theorist.

And whenever I say something bad about anything related to socialism they think I'm some cold-blooded reptile that hates education, children, and old people.

Or how the EU is a really bad idea or how the UN is really a bunch of warmongers. And how the euro is losing value.

Basically anything that involves thinking and forming your own opinion is taboo in todays society.

Oh yes, we'd get along quite well.

I really need my own country. It's doesn't even have to be big. Give me two acres and complete autonomy from this crap ass gov't.

Yea, the principles may be alright, but when no one follows them, it's kinda pointless.

I have an issue with people picking on the n00bs. Yea, so they posted in the wrong spot. You don't have to tear up their entire thread pointing it out.

And just other random good manners stuff that some people here seem to be missing. It's not a matter of whats socially acceptable, it's whats not rude beyond all reason. I'm not naming names, and I'm not making examples, cause those people should know who they are.

It does seem to be a bit of a taboo to point out someone may have been a bit of a butt about something.

Federal reserves, anti-EU, this stuff falls into the classic sex, politics, religion taboo, which isn't really what I hope to hear about here.

I don't think I can pass you on those ones. Must try harder.

People hassling noobs, yes, it's so long since I've been one, let me try and remember...I think, you just hang in there, no matter how much you're ignored or how invisible you feel. Again, not a truly taboo subject in my mind, others have made the same complaint many times. calling people a 'butt' yes, thats a taboo, I broke it the other day. sometimes you have to. they want it, they're begging for it.

Not having a superior-lesser being relationship with your parents.

I never knew until I was a teen that your parents are your ultimate superiority and authority and that you have to please them.

Apparently, it's the ultimate weirdness if your parents treat you like someone who they're supposed to take care of and you're automatically less of a human person if anyone knows you didn't grow up being treated like a doll that you superior non-fallible parents could decide over.

People get real aggressive over it.

I think being happy and well-adjusted is a bit of a taboo subject here.

It's seemingly a taboo everywhere, actually.

I asked my non-autistic friends if they also liked themselves and were content with how they were and they said that thinking is strange and that other people don't normally think so.

Delusions of persecution?

Delusion of non-freedom?
