Sorry if this gets too long, but I am really at my wit's end with this situation!
I have a brother that has been diagnosed with schizo affective disorder for just over 10 years. He is now 36. He did okay during formative school years--but not well socialized. In college he had a series of meltdowns. After that, my father got him a job and he has since lived with my parents. Our minister referred us to counseling for him because of his "failure to launch." He has been completely drugged up on anti psychotics and other meds. He had delayed development, but was never diagnosed as anything as a child. Only started speaking in phrases and sentences at 5, only potty trained at 5. Never did well with peers or in social settings. He has some OCD and a lot of repetetive inappropriate sayings, jokes and songs that he goes through. He always is gesturing or playing with things with his hands. He is a savant in math and history. Does not do well socially in his job--he is a math tutor, but rather than teach, he does his students' homework for them.

I have asked my parents to take him to another doctor (provided a list of specialists) to get evaluated for autism or PDD. They have not done so. I live 3000 miles away but am moving back this fall. How can I approach his doctor about getting him evaluated? How do I convince my parents to get him evaluated?

How do you think a different diagnosis will help him at this point? Would your parents be willing to take him off the drugs? Would it give him more piece-of-mind? Are there any local therapies available to him as an adult?
