From 18-20, I drank pretty heavily...and then my mom found a ton of empty beer bottles in my room (two large trash cans worth...hey, I was a lazy idiot) and confronted me about it.

After that, I used weed as a crutch, to the point that I got a prescription for it. Much like NocturnalQuilter said about alcohol, any weirdness that others perceived was generally attributed to the fact that I smoked about a gram of weed a day.

I've recently quit that, as I've come to realize that it simply makes my Asperger's worse.

Now I'm starting to find myself returning to alcohol. I know that I should probably worry about the fact that I'm starting to develop a taste for straight bourbon, but at least I have my short-term memory back...

I prefer pot - I drink but I don't really like alcohol, I find it too harsh. I doubt whether I would ever become an alcoholic, I can't take the hangovers. It's also not in my gene pool. I don't mind a beer or 3, a few nights a week, but I can't drink like young people can. I don't drink much at all if there's no pot around.

I drink quite a lot. Especially before I know that I have to go out and socialise with people. I just find it easier to be around people when I'm a little bit tipsy. I drink sometimes in the week as well, especially after a bad day at work - would say that at the moment, I get through about 3 bottles of wine a week. I would like to cut down, but situations and life make me need to drink.

Funny. I've just started drinking wine as a custom. And I drink it alone, sometimes stewing in negative emotions like fear, anger, resentment, and sadness.

I am well aware of how dangerous alcohol is for me. I have an uncle who was an alcoholic for a number of years, so I know the gene for alcohol-dependency runs in the family. The disease could claim me as it claimed that uncle of mine. He has his s**t together now, thank God.

I admit it freely- I drink. A lot. Usually 6 or more drink per day, every day. It helps me to numb the fear, stiffle the doubts and gloss over the idiotic things I tend to say or do ("Oh, he's just been drinking". I guess for much of my adult life I've rathered preferred to be The Drunk rather than That Guy with What's-It-Called.

Having 'been there' myself, I can tell you that, no, you don't want to be known as The Drunk. I've been called similar names in the past and it's a stigma you never shake, no matter how many years it's been between now and your last drink or last hit of speed.

Like you, I wanted to numb myself against the cold, hard world that treated me like s**t, and it worked for a while. But then one day you will wake up and think, "I don't want to live like this any more." You'll start wanting that which your similarly-aged peers have - a house, a car, a good job, etc - and you can't have all this because you've just spent ten years in a haze.

When I got to that point of realization, I started thinking thoughts like, "I don't want to live anymore." I attempted suicide 5 times in my life, and it wasn't until I quit drinking and doing dope that I finally found a way to salvage what was left of my life and begin facing it head-on.

You can't hide from life behind a bottle forever. Sooner or later, your body starts giving out in ways you never thought of and it will happen a lot sooner than you'd think. I knew a guy, a functioning alcoholic, who died of kidney failure at the age of 32. It was a slow and painful death. Trust me, you don't want to go that way. You don't want to be 'The Guy They Found Dead in a Cheap Motel Room.'

But why are some members being allowed to gleefully break rules in the first place?

they are not 'allowed', they are just not detected and BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE MODERATORS. We have always encouraged people to report violation of the rules to our attention. We can't be everywhere, you know.

and Roger Rabbit. I don't know if it was the same reason, but I have been awake for more movies than those I have fallen asleep in.

All during high school I avoided taking any mind-altering substance because I was terrified my life would be unbearable once I came down from the high. Then my friend talked me into bringing a case of beer to our senior class party. I passed out in the woods and was sick for two days after that. In college, I found out I fit in with all the other drunks. I hadn't felt that sense of belonging before. I continued drinking to medicate my anxiety. Finally, about 8 years ago I realized my life was rapidly becoming disaster so I joined an agnostic AA group. I now lead that group every week. I got therapy to deal with my anxiety and depression. I know if I stop going to meetings, I will forget my tendency to keep drinking and drinking once I start and I will get myself into a real mess, so I have the meetings recurring on my google calendar with no end date.

I am too conscious about my weight to drink alcohol. Plus, I honestly don't like its taste. As well as drinking to conform, I have always thought that people use drink as an aphrodisiac, which is, from my perspective, somewhat depraved and unethical.
