I think it's important just for that reason. People watch that show, and it could be their only exposure to the subject--how it's portrayed is quite important.
If I were the writer, I'd write the character as I wanted, and then have a guest star with another kind of autism, wildly different, to make the point that we're diverse like that. And not just "functioning level" different, like one with AS and one with LFA, because that would be just asking for stereotypes. Bring in another Aspie with a different personality--that'd make the point handily, and you wouldn't even have to hammer it home (though they might, being silly TV executives who think Viewers are Morons).
