I need some help. You see, I have a really old habit of clearing my throat when I am not talking at all. I am trying really hard to get rid of it, but I can't. I have tried cough drops, and they seem to minimize it slightly, but they do not eliminate it entirely. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also want to know if this habit is another common Aspie trait.

That sounds like a tic and not "medically" related. Aspies can get tics (or even full-blown Tourette's). Maybe you could enquire to some of the members on here who also have tics or Tourette's. I know Sean has Tourette's.

I used to have the same tic of throat clearing. But it eventually went away. I don't really know why.

I'm constantly clearing my throat. I'm not really aware that I'm doing it. While in the presence of others, they think I'm trying to butt into/interject something into the conversation, but it ins't true.

My mother does the same thing.
I've kinda wondered if I have tourette's.

I often do this too, but I can't tell if it's a tic or if it's actually related to frequent allergy symptoms I experience. As I am a disc jockey, it might also be a subtle inner fear of my voice crapping out behind the microphone in mid-sentence.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up before.

I had this problem from age 12-14. But mine was NOT a tic, even though the doctors said so. I knew darn well I was doing it as I had OCD problems at that time (which I won't go into)

But beating OCD isn't really what you're talking about, I don't think, but I beat it when I didn't want the guy I like to think I was weird.

It worked. (he liked me back too :p)

I have tic problems, however I've noticed that I do clear my throat, but it's always becasue I feel as if I have something stuck in it.

You can have a tic or tics without having full-blown Tourette's. I can't recall how many of what kinds of tics you need to have to qualify. I'd look it up in the DSM, but I'm too lazy right now. Maybe Sean will come in sooner or later.
