Do you guys have that ad with the woman on the scale and all you see are her legs, scanning up she is fat, scanning down, she is skinny?

This ad is so bothersome. It's up and down and up and down.

The founders of this site should know that that kind of upa nd downa nd up and downa nd up and down and up and downa nd up and down and up and down, etccccccccccccccccccc ad infinitum would drive us crazy.

Or the ones with the lady;s belly- fat then skinny.

Get a grip/.

I get very few ads on WrongPlanet (other than the ad for the WP store in the upper left corner.)

My solution is to run Firefox with the NoScript addin. NoScript prevents scripts from running except from sites that I have approved. The up and down ad motion that you are seeing? It is because of a script that is running from another site! The only 2 sites that I have flagged to trust the scripts from as I browse here are WrongPlanet.net and Quantserve.com (which I think has something to do with the database that hosts the forum messages).

There are other companies that are attempting to run scripts (even as I write this) including Amazon.com (which I trust if I am browsing their site, but I don't trust on any other site since they are serving ads, etc), Technorati.com, Exponential.com, GoogleSyndicaton.com and Google-Analytics.com - the board continues to run fine even though the scripts aren't running from these other sites.

The only drawback is a question of ethics. By not seeing the ads that bounce around and annoy me, I am taking money out of the pockets of our beloved site administrators. In terms of revenue it is as though I am not actually reading the forum. But so far I haven't lost any sleep over that issue.

I'd have to agree - I'm really distracted by animated ads, in general - but the weight loss ones are especially obnoxious. The ones on the side of the screen are difficult for me to ignore, since resizing my window just decreases the width of the WP content & leaves the side bars in the window - so the ads take up more relative space.

That being said - I know that the website costs money to run & relies on ad revenue to pay for it. And I really love this forum. So in the interest of reducing the number of obnoxious ads, I just became a supporting member (see the link near the top of the page - "Support Wrong Planet Awareness!) :)

Sorenna,
another option to the one Nephesh has said.....
have ever used firefox: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/firefox/
with the adblock plus extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
?

With that will never see the ads on WP,am have never seen them apart from when at sisters as she was too lazy to install adblock plus, though recently did it for her.

I get so sick and tired seeing the weight ads and I also get so sick and tired of seeing two little girls on the side.

Yeah...it's as if the second that a topic is mentioned, an ad pertaining to it just clings on and won't let go.

Like the child abuse ad. One thread on child abuse, and the ad just appeared. The same with the military one.

Personally, I'm a bit more bothered by the Google ads. Just the implication that the only people browsing this site are parents who desperately want to "cure" their kid. All of them seem to have to do with medication/services for kids. Especially the whole "native remedies" one. What's up with that?

I've never noticed animated adds.

Except, I did actually just now notice the ad at the top is animated, but that's always out of view when reading posts, and I only looked at it because of the topic. Plus it's easy to scroll out of view when writing posts. Some of the ads on the sides are annoying, on occasion (though not usually), but I don't recall every noticing animation.

Ah, animated ads at the bottom too. And that's the one you were talking about. I rarely see those either. Too low on the screen. I've no reason to scroll down that far, basically.

Some ads can be very annoying, but I have my reasons for leaving them alone.

I'm not going to take my time to get rid of ads (and have to deal with other annoying things while getting rid of them).

I like paid for by advertising because it lowers costs on things I like service from (if there any adverse effects in any way other than annoying ads, I'd like to hear them). If everyone were to block internet ads, then they would either find another way to get advertisement out there, or we would all be paying more money in the long run. You wouldn't want to have to actually sit and wait for advertisements just to make a post, would you? They can do that you know!

My only problem currently are the loud obnoxious ones with bright flashes, noise, or inconvenient ones for dial-up users (although I am on cable internet), and of course and malicious advertisements.

Whenever I go on Wrong Planet on my Laptop there's a "Jungle Book" advert that annoys me.

Yeah those are the ones I get. I don't understand the child abuser one and I think 'keep Franki in school' is stupid but I don't think they're a big problem.

Animated adverts are the annoying ones. I think ones that flash should be banned somehow. I have not seen any animated ones on WP though.
