Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone else feels the need to constantly chew on things. I know I do. Me pens and pencils all look like hell. I have chewed mechanical pencils to the point that the insides get bent and they no longer work. I have bitten THROUGH pens and got a mouth full of ink. I am currently gnawing on a wrist band(my chewie!). I have noticed that my boyfriend(diagnosed with AS) does the same thing. So, what do you guys think? Asperger's tendency or odd oral fixation?

I used to love to chew on anything and everything! I don't do it much these days but I grind my teeth instead :P

I chew gum all day and if I don't have gum I get really irritable oh and the gum can't be mushy that isn't satisfying and I get the urge to eat it LOL

yep. it is a form of stimming.

so is jaw clenching and bruxism (teeth grinding in one's sleep.) i wear a frigging mouth guard at night for the latter because i have abnormal palate bone growth due to this form of extreme stimming at night. sounds great at the bedroom door i am told!

Heh, I am also a chronic gum chewer and I agree mushy gum=EPIC FAIL. I grind my teeth as well though I do not know if I do it while I sleep.

I have always chewed on things
I have a addiction to things called chewy tubes,

The blue ones are the adult sized ones, and last me a good while, although I love the green one with bumps.

When I was a kid I would chew on anything, if you stuck a toilet brush infront of me, I would have chewed on it, lol

The only side affect of the chewy tubes is they make a sort of a slight squeaking sound. I like the sound, but some might not. A alternative would be a baby tether, but you cant get a good bite on them. The chewy tubes you can stick in your back teeth and really chomp down on it.

Inside of cheeks, pens and pencils... I am guilty of all. I used to chew on my sleeves until I started wearing short-sleeved shirts. I still nuzzle on the collar of a shirt if the neckline is touching my chin.

I can't believe there are other gum chewers here.

Boi and other gum chewers- how much do you chew?

At my worst I was up to 500 pieces a day. It was horrible.

I quit with the help of a BF who literally yanked it out of my mouth day or night.

I am glad to be done with it.

When I went gluten / dairy free the desire stopped.

Do you guys mind it or does it drive you nuts?

nail, lip and inside cheek biting are all supposed to be common in a.s. i do them all. i dont thnik its neccessarily an oral fixation- or even nervousness. i just can't stop it.
i used my teeth to scrape all the nasty anti-biting nail varnish my mum painted on my finger nails when i was little- nothing stopped me.
