I posted a little while ago about a speech I was giving this Sunday for an autism walk in upstate New York. I have been having a lot of trouble putting together what I wanna say and have jumped everywhere from wanting to compare society's treatement of aspegers to how we treated african americans a hundred years ago (but feel like thats extreme), bringing up ideas for how nt's could connect to autistic individuals (but am having trouble with examples), bringing up how we don't want a cure (but than have to recognize that their may be lower functioning individuals parents there who may disagree), or even blaming the audience which is mostly NT for making us more anxious than we need to be (but thats just stupid and not true)..... IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP ME PUT IN THINGS FOR THIS TEN MINUTE SPEECH...IT'LL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

just make it personal.

start with how you lived and felt in school
then talk about what AS is and how it explains your life
then say what a relief it is to understand that you have AS and be around other aspies.

Hi, Joshandspot. Before writing a speech, you need to have a clear idea WHO your audience is and WHAT MESSAGE you want to communicate. If you're trying to educate an audience consisting mainly of NTs, you'll probably need to include some introductory information about autism spectrum conditions and also share some personal experiences so that the audience can relate to you as a human being and empathise with your cause. Also explain what you would like them to do in order to help, and give examples and suggestions. You're right in not wanting to alienate your NT audience by blaming and shaming- it wouldn't be helpful.

I'm an English teacher (and NT- hope that's not a problem) and I've had a lot of practice in teaching people how to make speeches, so if you want any further help, just ask. Jenny
