One of the things I have noticed when observing NT's is that their perception/understanding of the world seems different than my own.

The best way I can think of to describe it is that the world is like an onion with many layers. NT's are content with only perceiving the shallow layers, and some of them aren't even aware that there are deeper layers, whereas Aspies tend to dig deeper. Some people would even think you're insane or "weird" if you suggested that there's more to life than what they know.

I'm unsure why we do this, and although intelligence probably has some role, it can't be the only one, since NT's can be equally or more intelligent than Aspies, and they are still content with the shallow layers.

Of course not all NT's are like this, and I'm sure not all Aspies are either, but I've noticed it more when I'm around NT's than around Aspies.

Just wondered what the rest of you think? Have you noticed this phenomenon?

YES!

So many NT's are shallow as dishwater and I've yet to find an aspie without depth.

I love my aspie friends and aspie acquaintances for that reason.

I asked my aunt why God took my kitten. She said, "How do you know God took your kitten? Just stop dwelling on his death."

I asked a strange aspie at my support group and got this answer: "Sometimes, the most precious and valuable lives are the shortest. They are here for a potent period of love and joy and then their job is done."

Don't take life so seriously. It isn't permanent!

I know what you're talking about but I think it's an extroversion thing as opposed to an NT thing. I know people who are EXTREMELY intelligent but also very extroverted, who can "understand" the layered thinking somewhat if I explain it, but are basically incapable of thinking that way on their own. It's as if, for them, information that's taken in is immediately processed into coherent and structured blocks of usable knowledge, which is something I am certainly not capable of, but the resulting downside for them is that the amount, detail, and depth of the information can't be on the same level. Fast thinking versus deep thinking.

Everyone's perception of the world is different, to an extent. The way you perceive the world has little to do with whether you are NT or an Aspie. It simply depends on if an individual is willing to take a new perspective of the world, willing to expand your limits of understanding the world, and willing to evolving your mind based on the new understood perspective. Nearly everyone with a working brain is capable of evolving their mind, regardless of being NT or aspie, it's just that some are unaware of this ability, or are too far endowed into their own way of thinking to take on new information.

Totally off topic:

Onions as vegetable:

Take three to five middle sized onions, remove the skin and place those in a pot with a well closing lid. Add some butter or olive oil, vegetable or beef stock, black pepper, nutmeg and caraway. Close the pot well and let it cook for ca. 20 min. Serve as it a vegetable (instead of beans, etc.). You may replace the caraway with thyme to give the dish an other direction of taste.

We may be able to dig deeper into the layers, but sometimes it seems like we're too busy staring at this one onion to realize there are many other varieties of onion we could be studying.
