it reminded me alarmingly of my own deer versus bicycle misadventure in 2012 which hospitalized me for a week and nearly bankrupted me.

The beloved poem/prayer beginning with the words ‘Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace...’ was not written by St. Francis of Assisi.
He died in 1226.
The prayer can be traced back only as early as 1912, when it was published in a Catholic magazine , La Clochette.

DESIDERATA
Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world in full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is: many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Often attributed as "Found in Old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore: Dated 1692."
Actually, Desiderata was written in 1927 by an obscure Indiana lawyer and poet named Max Ehrmann. Sources include: The Washington Post, November 27, 1977.

Thank you so much for sharing that; it is one of my favorites.

Mr. Ehrmann certainly knew the human mind and heart.

Both the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and Christopher Columbus arriving in the New World in 1492 happened on the same day and same month October 14.

Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson was originally called Mrs Roosevelt, in tribute to Eleanor.

^ I've got to share this with my dad, he loves that song!

J. R. R. Tolkien created the character Luthien with his wife in mind.

most baby boomers are familiar with the song "the morning after" by maureen mcgovern, but that was not the original version of the song used in the movie, which is here performed in its originality by Renee Armand, who was discovered by Tony Bennett performing in a san francisco club in the early 70s-
