Grace Kelly and Clark Gable had an affair while filming ‘Mogambo’.
Ms. Kelly was in love with him and wanted to marry him.
He was not that serious about her, dumped her, and broke her heart.

The first interracial sound recording was made in 1909 by Polk Miller & the Old South Quartette, on the Edison label. It was released as a four-minute cylinder phonograph record. Mr. Miller played the banjo and sang the verses and the Quartette sang harmony on the refrain.

Polk Miller was a Confederate veteran who liked Southern music, and the Old South Quartette was all freedmen. They disbanded the Quartette in 1913 when Polk Miller thought that racism was too dangerous to the safety of his friends, who (for safety's sake) went anonymous.

The Old South Quartette disappeared, and only resurfaced c. 1928, in Harlem, where they had picked up jazz music and were singing that presumably in nightclubs but also on QRS Records (famous for QRS player piano rolls but also for some 78rpm discs) instead of preserving 19th-century Negro songs & Confederate marching music. Mark Twain himself had loved their early recordings, they were billed as an American sensation, and I think Polk Miller's peaceful retirement & the O.S.Q. finding a future in the cultural hub of Harlem is a very happy ending to this most American story of friendship and old music!

You don't want to know :P

On a lighter note, one of the best recording ever made in history is Clifford Jordan's Live At Ethell's , I always use it to test my audio gear.

The first time “Google” was used as a verb on TV was on the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In an episode from October of 2002, Willow asks Buffy “Have you Googled her yet?,” to which Xander replies “She’s 17!” - and Willow then has to clarify that Google is, in fact, a search engine.

You can tell from his vibes that he never had the willpower to settle down and when he did he would still cheat with or without the spouse's knowledge..

I dont know that Grace Kelly was that naive...

If you took the highest mountain on Earth, Everest, and dropped into to the deepest point in the Ocean, the Marianna's Trench (in the Pacific off of the Philipines), the top of Everest would be 7000 feet ( almost 1.5 miles, or two kilometers) beneath the surface of the ocean.

Vivien Leigh always complained that his breath stank of onions.

I had always heard that she complained that he had denture breath.
Anyhow, he expected her to be as fascinated by him as most women were.
She was not.
She was completely besotted by Laurence Olivier, and when they married they were the ‘golden couple’ of show business.
They eventually parted and divorced due to her mental instability; I had heard that it was schizophrenia.
She never really got over him. :(

Wasn't Oliver gay? And romantically involved with Danny Kaye?

Henry Ainley, an english actor, for a brief fling in 1937. his "official" biographer Terry Coleman had access to voluminous correspondence written to and from Olivier, and that was the only thing he could find out about his bisexuality.

‘Devil’s advocate’ was a real job until 1983.

Any time the Catholic church wanted to canonize a saint, an official acted as the devil’s advocate by questioning the candidate’s saintliness and arguing against their supposed miracles. If the potential saint could hold up to the intense criticism, the church knew they officially deserved the title.

So THAT's where the expression comes from!

I wonder why they abolished the job in 1983.

It might have something to do with the recent trend in canonizing saints from continents other than Europe - a trend which started about that time. When they propose canonizing someone martyred in middle ages Japan, or in Seventeenth Century South America, maybe they wanna make it easy. Kinda like Affirmative Action. Lol!

in japan, dogs don't bark, they instead are said to emit a "wahn-wahn" sound. likewise, cats don't meow, they instead are perceived as saying "nyahngoh."

That's cute, auntblabby!

Hannes Kolehmainen of Finland, Olympic marathon champion in 1920, became a United States citizen in 1921.

Abebe Bikila was a member of Haile Selassie's palace guard. He was also the first repeat winner of the Olympic marathon.
